Your GXR lens mount lenses wishlist? ;)

It's more or less confirmed fact that Ricoh is going to release lens mount GXR module. At the moment, we don't know the type of mount. But considering the short M mount flange back distance, no AF to cannibalize Ricoh own APSC modules, no royalties for M mount (it's now patent free) and general popularity of the Leica brand in Japan, it's in my opinion safe to say that the M mount is the most probable candidate for the GXR mount module? But even if it appears to be another mount, M and other mounts will most probably be available via the 3rd party adapters. I think it would be interesting to put together a list of interesting lenses that we would like to use with upcoming GXR module.

Here is my wish list ;)...
EDIT
I almost forgot about Voigtlander 28/2 Ultron (about 550-600USD).
This one would turn to 42mm lens. 40mm is my very favorite focal length since the GRDII + GT1. So I believe this lens would suit me very well on GXR? ;)

Voigtlander 40/1.4 Nokton (about 370-420USD).
40mmnoktonneu04.jpg

On the APSC it turns to 60/1.4. It's very small lens and from what I've googled, it's very nice and very well performing lens for its money. This will be probably my first choice lens for GXR mount, because it's relative inexpensive ;) There are two versions of this lens. Single coated and multi coated. The single coated version should be better for B&W (revealing more details in shadows) while the multi coated version produces generally sharper and more contrast images.

Voigtlander Nokton 50 1.1 (about 800-900USD)
voigt_11_a.jpg

On the APSC it turns to 75/1.1. This could be a very nice portrait lens with extremely fast aperture. The fastest lens I ever owned was f1.4. I'm extremely interested to try such fast lens ;)

And the last lens I want is something in 85-90/2 range, which would turn to 128/135mm. Of course, at reasonable price, let's say around 900USD. Any tips?

Pavel,

I am a big fan of the Zeiss M-Mount lenses. While the Zeiss lenses are a bit more expensive than many of the VC lenses they are still often 1/3 the price of Leica lenses or less. The 25mm f2.8 would be an interesting focal length on a M module GXR however it would not be a short or small device.

Here is a review: http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2009/11/18/the-zeiss-zm-25-2-8-biogon-lens-review/

The VC lenses are terrific value and that 40mm has always intriuged me as well.

On my short list of Zeiss M glass would be maybe, 21 f4.5, 25mm f2.8 and the awesome 50mm f2. Its just something about the rendering of the Sonnar design that is just a hint of 3D in the images.

You are right Tim, these Zeiss lenses are very nice too! Unfortunately, their prices are beyond my willingness to invest to them ;) I don't care much about wider than 28mm manual lenses (lenses that would turn to less than 40mm on the APSC). Wider manual lenses usually start well beyond f3 and for this, I think, is better to use A12 28mm.

How I see it, the CV 40/1.4 MC will become my first choice lens. 50/1.1 would be ice to have, but I'm not sure I'm ready to invest $900 or so for this lens ;) I think I will rather jump to something longer than 50mm. 85-90mm with aperture around 1.4/2 would be very nice to have for very small DoF?

I have a large c-mount collection that I use for my m4/3 cameras. Looks like (from a quick web search) that these would fit the m-mount on a GXR with the appropriate adapter(s). Someone has validated that c-mount lenses will cover an APSC sensor - but that may not apply to the wides?

Does anyone know more about this?

Is that because they are both made by Cosina but the Zeiss required license royalties?

Pavel, I have recently discovered that Ricoh actually released the original GR lens as an M mount version in Japan only back in 1999. If you can find one for sale, you can have your 28mm (40mm equiv) favourite focal length on the GXR - with an actual Ricoh GR lens. :)

haha, yes I knew this, most Zeiss lenses but not all are made by Cosina - the exotic ones like I think the 18mm. In manufacturing there is always room for better quality. I like the lens designs I am sure, its the rendering, the CV labled stuff is great too. When looking at new prices, IMO the Zeiss lenses are not that much more than the VC when you factor how much the Leica glass cost.

The 15/2.8 and 85/2 ZM lenses are the only German built lenses, the rest are made in the Cosina plant.

I'm a Leica M user - but I've stuck to film so far for most photography (thought I also always carry a GRDIII ).
A M mount GXR would be a welcome addition as I don't see myself buying a Leica M9 - due to my preference for old school B&W optical printing.

A x1.5 crop factor is going to be a little disappointing, but without a custom micro-lensed senor it's the best that can be expected.
At least it will better than the x2 crop of µ4/3 and it's edge smearing sensors.

I'm most looking forward to using the 12mm CV lens as an 18mm wide and the ZM 35/2.8 as a compact standard.
My 21mm Summilux should make a good if somewhat bulky 31.5mm f/1.4 wide ;
The 35mm Summilux will make a great standard and the 50mm Summilux make a good portrait 75mm :D

The only thing I would encourage Ricoh to do is to spin the GXR an add a built in EVF.

Anthony, the "only" problem is that one can't find such rare lens under $1500. It would be very nice to try this lens with Ricoh GXR mount module. A natural symbiosis of the best of two Ricoh worlds. But I doubt I will have this opportunity ;)

Hi Keith,
I believe I saw some C-mount photos taken with NEX? So they are usable with APSC. But you should be ready for dark corners (even worse than with 4/3). It all depends of the particular lens.

Hi,

I would love if Ricoh could include a GPS receiver into a future unit? I like adding geospatial information on my images! Haha!

Cheers

I believe I heard or read somewhere that there is planned battery grip for GXR, which would include GPS receiver? Honestly, a built-in GPS receiver in the GXR body would be a tragedy for already not very powerful GXR battery ;)

As the first step of my 'steampunk' GXR microscope project, I just bought one of these Leitz MIKAS lens (adapter) on ebay. This lens is interesting because it actually has its own mirror which you use for the eyepiece which then flips out of the way just like one in an SLR camera. The shutter only works by cable release.

mikas-und-md-a.jpg

It's 1930-era and a Leica thread mount so I need to get a LTM to M adapter. But I'll wait to be sure - I may need a u4/3 adapter instead! :geek:

Leitz lens. So I'm going to mount it on a Leitz microscope. Similar to this one from 1904 (except not in as good condition - too expensive in this sort of condition!):

Back on the subject of the Voigtlander lenses, mounting fast normal lenses is great, but it would be the biggest deal for me (and many other M-Mount or LTM enthusiasts) if the GXR M module would allow the use of rear projecting wide angle lenses. I want to shoot my 12 or 15mm lenses on a digital mount (with as big a sensor as possible), but I can't stretch to a M9 and they won't fit on a m4/3 camera. Literally, they won't fit in the hole even with an adapter. I read that the APS-C NEX will do it, but the menu and control system is the worst kind of nasty. The GXR could be what I need.
