Here is a link to some of my PX photos. Sorry for the redirecting to another site, but I thought that this would be easier than posting here, if you want an impression of the output of the PX.

All-in-all I find this a useful tool because of its compactness and the fact that it's environmentally-sealed. I'm a bit disappointed that image quality of scene and landscape shots is lacking detail and sharpness, but it's nice to have a fairly versatile camera always at hand without worrying about dirt or water. And for the 250$ I paid (after four months on the market already gone down to 200$...), it's decent value.
I do very minor PP in Picasa - usually sharpening or cropping.
 
I checked out your flickr photos - you have some excellent pictures on there! It doesn't matter about the loss of detail and sharpness in the pictures you have posted on your site, because it actually seems to enhance the pictures - I can see how you've tried to work around the image quality and use it to your advantage, and how you've made the best with what you've got, though I can see how it would be challenging to get good scenic shots from this camera. However, a good photographer can take good shots with any camera, and this is what you've done ;) .

Thank you, Athena! Yes, you are right. After the initial disappointment, I learned that there are types of shots that will be satisfying enough within the limits of this camera - and this has helped me to get focused on what's important to me in an image and in a camera.
 
Quester, I visited flickr and let me say that you have a lot of very nice pictures!
I completely agree with Athena... a good photographer is the one that take good shots with any camera.
 
I just love the shadow picture of your hand (I suppose it is yours) and the camera. That one shot is outstanding, the rest are very good too. I am just giving the PX as a birthday gift, so glad to see one can take good photos with it!

Thank you, spb ! I didn't have the opportunity to compare this camera with similar models, but I think this is a very nice birthday gift indeed. Nicely designed and convenient.

quester, IMO any camera is better than no camera. Added to your need for something tough, the PX is a good choice.
If you didnt have the PX you'd miss these opportunities altogether. I enjoyed having a look though your images.
 
I am really really annoyed that I bought this camera. It takes crap pictures inside with or without flash and they even look pixelated on the tiny screen. I think I shall have it checked over at the shop or replaced. On the other hand I am more than happy with my GXR. Wife doesn't want a bulky GXR so I bought the PX. Maybe an example in a minute or two. It definitely does not seem to be good inside a home with or without flash. Whereas with a GXR you can take lovely photos inside without flash and low shutter speeds and wide open even with the S10.
 
Hi spb_ch,

As one who owns a PX, I think you may be judging it a bit harshly - while image quality certainly can't match the GXR (and isn't supposed to), the camera can take reasonable photos in almost any reasonable situation.

I found out that if you want to take pics indoors or in low light, it is better not to use one of the pre-programmed modes, but to put it in P (Premium) mode, and restrict the ISO to 400 or 800. You might be using the auto mode or a pre-programmed "Night Scene" mode, which I have found not to be completely reliable, because the ISO can go up to 1600 or 3200 - in which case you will get noise or pixelation. Of course, you will have to keep a steady hand, because exposure time will increase.
In fact, I have never needed the flash for indoor shots, even when the lighting is minimal.

Let me know if I might be able to help by doing a compare shot with my camera.
 
Quester. I really wanted to like the PX, after all it was a present given by me, so I went back to the shop and they demonstrated it against an Ixus 230 both without flash and then both pictures printed in the shop. The PX has better white balance that was for sure. They turned the MP down to 10MP 4:3 and the pixellation is just gone..... taken several pictures since. It looks fine. I wanted to restrict it to maximum 200 ISO, but can never seem to get it to stay at that or no higher.

I wouldn't dream to compare GXR to PX, different game altogether.

It seems to me it is so easy to change settings inadvertently. That is the challenge to stop that and set the ISO to 100, with a maximum allowed of 200. So if you know how to do that please let me know......

I now put it into P mode. There I have set 100 ISO, limit of 200 ISO, etc and it seems to be behaving. I guess one just has to keep it in P mode.
 
If you want to control the ISO settings, you have to have the camera in P mode.
Once you have done this, you can enter the "Shooting" menu, and scroll down until the page flips to Page 2.
Then you scroll down to the second entry : ISO Setting.
There you have choices from Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200. You can choose either of these by pressing on the external Menu/OK button on the camera.
When you've finished with that, you can continue to scroll down the page another step, and you reach "Maximum for ISO Auto. There you have values from 200-3200 - either can be chosen, again, through the use of the external Menu/OK button.

Just remember that if you do restrict the ISO, that you have done so - because it will remain in this setting until you change it again. I have made the mistake of forgetting this, and taken shots with unsuitable ISO settings.

I have never had problems with the 12, 14 or 16 MP settings.

Actually, except for the small sensor and lack of sharpness, this camera is quite OK.
 
I am not convinced about the MP either. However I do see that the first step should be to put the camera in P mode. Then I see all the relevant Menu options especial for the ISO and image quality. Will be testing it again tomorrow in mixed lighting all in P mode.

I am not sure if this is the right time or place to post this, but the impartial Austrian consumer magazine 'Konsument' (http://www.konsument.at) ran a camera test for this month's issue and absolutely slated the PX, describing it as 'weniger zufriedenstellend', awarding it only 26%. The top camera was the Nikon Coolpix S100 (65%). I really know very little about most of the competition, but the tests are not really about 1st 2nd and 3rd, but each camera is tested against a set of criteria for which points are awarded. These criteria include picture quality (PX=poor), display (PX=unsatisfactory), video (PX=unsatisfactory), flash (PX=poor), handling (PX=poor), instruction manual (PX=average). It could be that my German translations are not absolutely correct, but they approximately express the performance as judged, iws.
Not being aware of how 'brand focused' these guys are, nor whether they have received a bad camera, I would not really like to say more. Perhaps Ricoh would like to approach them to query this result?
The other 'bum' cameras were Fujifilm FinePix S3300 (49%), Casio Exilim EX-Zs100 (44%), Olympus VR-320 (44%), Casio 20 (42%) and Olympus VG-120 (39%). As you can see, the PX came out very much the worst of all the test cameras! :?

I am glad it is not my only camera. I found the manual jumps around so much with references to this and that page, frustrating at best. I think the display is acceptable and the control placements fine, but as yet I am definitely not happy with the images coming from it. We will see.
 
Well, I can agree that this is not the best of its kind - but for the price (now $180) and what it can do, again, it's not bad. I bought it without even trying it or comparing it to other models - just don't have that option here. I was also too scared to spend more money on a better camera, knowing that I would be exposing it daily to dust and water, and not even knowing if getting back to photography would interest me.

Now I'm looking for the next camera.... ;)
 
I suppose I had it coming, I bought it blind. No camera shop I know stocks Ricoh around here. Then I was spoilt by the GXR which is an ace of a camera. I thought well the GXR is great the others are pretty well regarded and I chose the PX because I thought it would be easy for a novice to get good results.
