GRD V - discussion, what may it bring?

Manual focus ring around lens? Looks like it might have one.

Focus peaking?

Phase detect on sensor?

Photoblographer obviously mot familiar with the GRD (series) - what in tarnation is "press button on back to get AF ?"

Presume has similar level of customisation as GRDIII/IV and GXR.

Tom

Tom,

The lever/button on the back looks like it offer Focus/Aperture lock or continuous auto focus (the lever settings). I guess the button activates the AFL/AEL when pressed with the lever 'up'.

i don't undertand why they always put a flash but not a viewfinder into he camera.

The camera is designed to capture your vision with the least amount of intrusion as possible. So floating the camera in time and space and looking at your screen, allows you to see reality and the new reality on your screen. A viewfinder can't do it the same way. You have to plant the camera at your face and only 1 eye can see reality while the other sees the image in the finder. I do a lot of hip, chest, hand etc shots. I can see my photo moving the camera and also the subject at the same time.

I have a few post on my blog about this .......

This and the fact that there isn't any room for a viewfinder. The tiny viewfinder on the film GR1 series was horrible. Take a GRD apart and you will quickly find out it's impossible.

The TAv mode essentially allows you to set the shutter speed, and the aperture while the camera adjusts for the exposure using the ISO

Thanks Mike, what do you think? Likely a mode for the Street Photographer?

I don't know. Since 90% of my photography is at night I'll probably still use Aperture priority at f2.8 and ISO 3200

Makes perfect sense with this camera. Reminds that all you could do with the GR1 (and its film successors) was to either set an aperture or leave it in P-mode. It was reliable and worked perfectly to get well exposed slides. I think the new GR will make it possible to photograph that way too.

That makes sense, it didn't bother me, I am sure that we will find out in due course of time, it is more a comment on the depth of the photoblographers quick look and general knowledge of Ricoh product.

Is it true that Pentax have predicted a big product launch later today (17th already in Oz)? If so I would suppose that the GR will be included in "the party".

Re: GRD A (aperture)

The user interface of GRD has been one of the best in industry so you will probably hate me for this. I'ts the first part of the design concept for a aperture priority GRD V. It's influenced by the design of GR film cameras and also the by fact that many of GRD users are shooting mostly either on full manual or aperture priority mode. For me the scenes dial is unnecessary so I replaced it with the aperture dial like used in analog GR models. I could have add the "A" mode (ala Leica X) but I didn't because I hate it. So its a personal statement.

To set the time for exposure you have to use the dial on back of the camera. You can choose it longer or shorter or just push it for auto value. If camera is switched on it will set an auto value from the first reading so you are ready to shoot right away. ISO values are accessed trough the front dial and will be remembered.

Edit: for Auto ISO session you can switch the functionality of front and back dials. And erase the memory of ISO dial after every switch-off.
Edit: added a dedicated button for video recordings.
Edit: added magnetic lens converter (fisheye?)

Found this thread yesterday and really like t3hh's idea. I'd buy it. I posted it over at the dpreview whre people are talking about the GR2.

Hope you don't mind. Bring back the GRD!

The beuaty of the GRD-IV was its extreme close focus capability - something lost on the GR. For all the time I have had a GRD I have used it as some sort of "emergency" photocopier. Skew correction mode comes in handy at time. I suppose that Ricoh's experience in the photocopier industry rubs off for small compact lenses that are capable of very close undistorted focus capacity.

If the GR needs an extra - bring back ultra-close focus. However it might mean a lens that extends much further and and increase in the old dust inside lens bogey.
