dpreview review of the GXR with S10 module

I have to agree with them on their conclusion: the S10 doesn't make any sense unless you buy into the GXR's modular concept. There is just to much of a cost and size penalty. You can complain about the low score, but I think it is really hard to justify purchasing an S10 by itself, at least until it is priced to GX200 levels.

IMO, it only becomes attractive when you're seriously considering purchasing the APSC sensor modules. Then it has the appeal of an added accessory. From what I understand, Ricohists (?) are completists, so that is probably a good move on Ricoh's part. (I have all the GX100 accessories, so maybe I'm just talking for myself.)

It also looks better than releasing on lensor a year, which is where they'd be without the S10 and P10. It can't cost that much in R&D, either.

Bottom line, taken by itself, the S10 doesn't quite make sense. :ugeek:

I am pondering here only but is it possible that Ricoh may backpedal and consider a update to the GX200 and make a GX300 if the GXR S10 does not do well enough? Thoughts

Tim,
As Ricoh did not give the CX3 DNG capabilities, one perhaps could be justified in thinking it is only a matter of time before a GX300 would appear. The GXR S10, IMHO, is not really filling the same market gap.
It is not that I am against the GXR but, like the previous comments, it is hard to see that you get three times the joy from buying the S10 in lieu of GX200...indeed I do wonder if the actual IQ is noticably better when shooting in RAW?

Interesting thread and article in dpreview. I couldn't see a mention of the GX200 and I struggle to see how the S10 module on the GXR offers that much more for the money than the GX200. Am I missing something?

i own he gxr with the 24-72 module , i still own the gx 200 too and when pixel peeping the sharpness winner is the gx 200, do i have a bad module?

I don't think you have a bad module. But it's hard to say without an example (both from GX200 and S10). GX200 is simply 12MP camera and at low ISO, it could really beat the lower resolution S10. On the other hand, GX200 is nearly useless beyond ISO400 because all that purple noise that cannot be cleaned.

I' ve just spent some Money for buying GXR+S10 Kit. (but less 400€ for brandnew Kit).
I decided to get this Kit because of keeping close to GX200 size and Features. Because of low price it just shall be a (better?) successor for the GX200 which I sold last march after nearly 4 years extended use.
I just missed the Ricoh Feeling and the superb handling. Now i'm back ;)

Welcome back busch63! The S10 is quite a sound unit though I have not used mine for a while. It is portable as well, and the nearest thing you will get to a GX300! Enjoy! :D

I think this is true, is the GXR+S10 really all that much bigger? Any photo comparison anyone?

Welcome back! I think you will not regret. The S10 has become my preferred walkabout companion! Even, I am using more and more the DW-6...and with the GXR, you can always go down the road of the manual lenses with the A12M.
Beware! It will, more than probably, be a black hole for your pocket...others will say a Pandora Box!

SRS are clearing unboxed S10s at £49 including delivery.....as I have a spare GXR back I just couldn't resist!

Obviously well out of touch ... who are "SRS"?

Ah! found it further back on the thread - cancel the whinge ...

Sounds good, cheaper than getting a camera back repaired for a little stray spot that I have in the lcd.

Sounds like the "last hurrah" as there are not that many left on eBay either.

Hi Tom,

Sorry to confuse. SRS Microsystems are a top rated camera dealership in Watford, England. They and Clifton Cameras (Bristol, England) are Ricoh Platinum dealers and seem to end-up with the remnants of the unsold UK stock on model run-out. I've bought from both and can recommend them as totally reliable.

The S10 arrived this morning (the £49 deal is just for the lens unit but included a 24 hr delivery) and it is clearly been taken from a kit as its in the original brown card bit of the box but doesn't have the outside part (for an extra £10 they can supply a boxed version but who wants to spend £10 on cardboard?). I've 'dedicated' it to my spare back which is also in a Ricoh SC 65 case (also bought from SRS - basically the same as the SC 75 except it won't take the M module) so I now have 3 cameras...the GRD4 in a case, the GXR A12 28 & 50 in a bag and the GXR P10 in a case. As I can hear Stanislaw groaning (if he's read this far), I've attached 3 pictures from my first outing taken in tricky light. I'm quite impressed with the unit (but it's very early days).

Nice pictures, Richard, considering the weather looks just as gloomy in the Black Isle as it is here in East Anglia.

I rashly checked that SRS still have some S10 units at £49 which is tempting me. I already have a P10 unit which of course has a longer range of FL than the S10. Is the image quality any better with the S10? I really need to talk myself out of another attack of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome).
