I love all European movies. French, Italian, German, Swedish, Dutch films - I love the style. Perhaps the European movies shown here in Australia are the "cream of the crop"?

One of the funniest films I've seen in recent times is German - Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1 (Dreamship Surprise - Period 1) its a StarWars, StarTrek parody and has some great action sequences and heaps of laughs. Til Schweiger is a fabulous actor. Skyfighters was a French "Top Gun" type film, great aerial action. Recently I saw my first Icelandic movie - the bothersome man - that was quite ok. Keep the movies coming Europe!

Having said all that a friend and I both love Asian cinema also.

What do you like? Can be anything, recent, old, just to get to know you better. :?:

Tim,
strangely it is easier to see European films in Scotland than here in Vienna.
Recent films enjoyed include 'From Paris with Love' which, though starring John Travolta, was nicely French on account of the story having been written be Luc Besson. Not a perfect film...but its imperfections add up to much more than you would expect!
Tulpan is another film recently watched, and thought provocking. "On the steppes of Kazakhstan, Asa lives in a yurt with his sister Samal, her husband Ondas, and their three children..."
Russian (I think) language but subtitled in German AND French...it was hard work I tell you! :D
Recent Hollywood 'like' was Meryl Streep in 'It's Complicated'.
Back to Scotland soon, so hoping to catch up with more rarified beasts then! ;)
Cheers!
Andy

The latest movie I saw that made an impression on me is The Weather Man (2005), which is a comedy that resonates precisely with my heart, and I find it hysterically funny.

Out of laziness I mostly watch American movies, because that's what's on the shelfs in the video store.

Galaxy Quest (1999) - a(n other) StarWars/StarTrek parody
Australia (2008) - :) I'm a fan of Baz Luhrmann
Qiu Ju da guan si (1992) - very slow, but touching
Gamle mænd i nye biler (2002) - hm, violent and macabre, with care, warmth, and humor

Combining your tastes I came to remember two great slow, SC-FI, non USA movies (well 1 and 1/2) "Stalker?" and "la Jetée"
both very photographic like, keep in your mind for ever...
I love Luc Besson too.

"Knockin' on heaven's door" with Til Shweiger is one of my favorites. "Barfuss" is also great movie.
The Bourne trilogy is very dynamic action movie and worth of seeing.
And what I would like to suggest to all of you and your kids is My neighbour Tottoro animated movie. It is awesome work!

We saw Barfuss (Barefoot) also a few weeks ago, it was very engaging. The Bourne trilogy was a good story and great action.

Thanks for the tip on Paris with Love - I'd be keen to see that and I have a buddy who is a big big Luc Besson fan!

I never saw The Weather Man, -- I'll have to put that on my list. Australia was for me had a peculiar feel, some reality in it but also surreal - it was ok for me.

I also love all jim Jarmush, but i am specially bound to "night on earth".
Miya's movies are sooooo lovely, I am awaiting Nausicäa first release in Spain more than GRD5.
Another great animation surprise for me and my son were the 2 Kirikou films.
Stop motion: After enjoying so much "amazing Mr Fox" i discovered short film "Peter and the wolf"

Hi Marc, night on earth looks interesting http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102536/ that one is on my list now, thanks
Miya has so many, the kids love Kiki's Delivery Service
I'll check out the others!

Some good tips guys!

I recently saw one of my favorite movies "The Shawshank Redemption" with great Tim Robins and Morgan Freeman. It's an adaptation of S. King novel. If you are a fan of S. King books, you should not miss this one. It's not typical S.King work. But it's really great movie adaptation. Most of the TV/Movie adaptations of S.King books suck except the Shawshank Redemption, Kubrick's Shining and let's say Misery.

My other very favorite movie I recently saw was Nobody's Fool with Paul Newman.

I generally like the independent movies of all kinds (except the psychedelic ones :D) and I particularly love Kim Ki-duk's movies (South Korean writer and director). Of course, I have also few "action" and "blockbuster" favorites, namely the already classic Die Hard or Lethal Weapon, Rambo I, Alien/Aliens or Matrix I.

ahh yes, some of these are great just for the fun and entertainment, all these action movies Pavel has mentioned move at just the right pace.
Can I add AVP - Aliens vs Predator and the other original Predator (Arnies best movie IMHO) - the question is, is AVP the sequel to Aliens or Predator ?? -- very confusing.

Another scifi horror movie I enjoyed was 'The Thing' - the version with Kurt Russel. Speaking of Kurt Russel, I have long been a fan of Stargate the movie and watched all seasons of Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis. Just now enjoying Stargate Universe. Any other Stargate'rs here?

How could I forget these? The Thing is definitely great as well as Predator. Stargate is fine Sci-Fi movie too, but I don't really like the Stargate TV series. A very nice TV sci-fi series is "The Lost Room". Simple idea and not that bad execution.

BTW, as for the action movies, we should not forget "Dirty Harry" film series ;)

Just thinking about films in a Scottish context...and wondering if flims by Bill Forsyth are widely known? The two that spring to mind are Gregory's Girl and Local Hero. Love them both, but not sure that they will have stood the test of time!

Or Sean Connery in Hunt for Red October? Or Mel Gibson (he IS Scottish, is he not Tim? ;) )...Braveheart was a little over-exaulted in Scotland...but seemed to attract a world-wide audience. Which brings me on to Highlander, Rob Roy, Trainspotting...
OK, enough for now! :D

Pavel..........dont forget the green mile, also a stephen king movie adaptation..........and in my opinion one of his best movies.
Andy...........I once saw a great Scottish movie about an old fella who swam the english channel, I cant remember the name but it was very heart warming, he was out of work and his missus worked in the bingo hall........it was very touching.

I have many favorite films.......big fish, bladerunner, blackhawk down is one of the best war movies i've seen, goodfellas, the life of brian, and also many from tim burton.....sweeney todd, the nightmare befor christmas..........far too many to mention.............

.....I forgot the last samauri, American history X, starwars.........only the first 3 though(what was steve spielberg thinking of in the last 3?.......apart from a little bit more cash in the bank?) close encounters, also casablanca...one of my fav B+W movies!

+1 for me as well. Bladerunner is quite a cult film, but maybe not as quite as much as The Blues Brothers.

Hmmm, I tend to like apocalyptic movies such as Deep Impact, The Postman, Red Dawn, The Day After Tomorrow, the Terminator series. Apart from that, it's romantic comedies like Ever After (Drew Barrymore), Just Like Heaven (Reese Witherspoon), French Kiss (Meg Ryan), and Joe vs. The Volcano (Tom Hanks.)

For movies I think i'm more towards the type with dialogue or a black comedy
Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to stop worring and love the bomb (Stanley Kubrick)
Mystery Train (Jim Jarmusch) every Elvis fan should see this once.
Dead Man (Jim Jarmush) with Johnny Depp
Casino (Martin Scorsese) Sharone Stone's best acting ever.

I've seen many films from France, Germany & Hong Kong with subtitles that I've liked, but there titles excape me.

Not One Less (Zhang Yimou) beautifull movie from China. http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/not_one_less.htm

My favorite movie are:

1. The Italian Job
2. Troy
3. Spider Man 3
4. Matrix Revolution
5. Avatar

My favorites are :) Shinning by Stanley Kubrick and Big Fish By Tim Burton. and recently Julia Julie.
