UV filter for A12 28mm and 50mm

Hi guys,

Do you know what size of the filter for the GXR A12 modules is and where I can buy them online? Also, how do you put the filter on the A12 50mm, since it has a lens hood? I do not see a place to attached the filter.

Thanks!

The size of A12 filter thread is 40.5mm. A very uncommon size I would say. BTW, the size of filter is written at bottom of the lens cap ;)

The filter is screwed "inside" the lens (in the thread used by the lens cap). I'm afraid, you may not be able to use the lens hood with attached filter. At least not with A12 50 built-in hood.

I use a 40.5mm uv filter and the built-in hood can still be used.
Apart from uv filter, I also use CPL and star filters, they are all fine
good thing is you can still use the given lens cap as the filter is at the exact same size as the existing lens

but if you use an adapter to use larger filters, then of cos the hood won't work

I am not sure where you are at, but you can find a lot of different kinds of filter with 40.5 diameter on ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R40&_ ... Categories

Thanks eidiacc! I was told to get multi-coated filters using Schott glass for best effect. The 2 brands that was recommended to me are Hoya and B+W. Are these filters any good?

For the A12 28 I use a 40.5 to 43 mm step-up ring that exactly fits right in the lens hood. The step-up remains in the hood and isn't screwed to th lens itself. The lens cap by itself also fits this combo but will not fit when you have a filter attached.

For me this works. If I want to attach filters I put the hood on.

43mm filters are a bit more common than 40.5 but not by much. 43mm is also the size used for the GX100/200 filter tube (HA-something).

Hi Remko,
what make of 40.5 to 43 mm step-up ring do you use?
As I already have the HA-2 & HA-3, this combination sounds ideal...! :)
Thanks for this tip,
Andy

I use the UV filter as a protection to the expensive A12 50 lens so I didn't check the quality. But anyway, Marumi is a big filter brand from Japan so I think it is already.

So far, mine does everything an UV filter should do (honestly you don't really notice the difference in most cases, but you can do that simple UV light + filter + paper note test to see if the filter is a real UV filter or just a piece of glass).

If you are buying from a shop, I doubted if they will sell you bad stuffs, and you can test to see if it really does the trick. But if you are buying online, you better watch out!

Just one piece of advice: buy those filters with the side of the glass painted in black~ it can prevent light bouncing off inside the filter itself!

Hi Andy,

I did get them on ebay at Jiakgong: http://cgi.ebay.com/40-5mm-43mm-40-5-43 ... 1729wt_917

only cost you $3.90 for this one, this is where I've bought all my step-up rings so far. Takes about 2 to 3 weeks to deliver but at that price who cares.

I have 3 of them around, 1 in the 28mm hood, 1 attached to my DW-6 (to convert the 28mm into 21), and 1 separate when I want to mount a filter without the hood.

Brilliant!
Thank you very much for this information, Remko.
All the best,
Andy

I am not sure it is wise to be putting cheap glass in front of such fine lenses. There is an argument that it is better not to use any filter but if you do it should be of decent quality. I would go for B+W.

hey guys. can anybody recommend a really slim filter (with the possibility to attach the lens cap) for the A12 28mm module? i would prefer a polarising filter.

When only attaching 1 filter on the 28 it doesn't need to be a slim filter. But I definitively would recommend getting a quality (=expensive) circular polarizing filter. The 40.5mm size of the 28mm is rare, but getting one does allow you to snap on the supplied lens cap. B+W makes 40.5mm filters and that is a high quality brand.

If you read the above thread you'll see that I handle things differently with filters on the 28mm.
