Strange Sound When Lens Stretches Up...

Hi, today when I powered on my GRD iv, I heard some very strange sound, although all the functionality is all right.

It sounds just like that the camera "doesn't have enough strength" to power its lens, especially when camparing with the normal "acute" and "noisy" sound.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhXBM9iAoNg)

I actually had heard it once. That is one month before when I used my GRD iv in the rain. Today I heard it again. There was no rain but it is really very cold(-1°C maybe).

Does anybody experienced this ? I am very pleased to have your reply.

Mine sounds the same as the youtube clip. It may be a temperature thing or perhaps a battery not coping....does it make the same sound once you've been indoors for a few hours? Can you try a different battery? I think I would be inclined to leave the camera in a warm & dry room for a few hours.

Hi, Richard, thanks for reply from you. Actually I never notice the strange sound indoor. I think it is caused by my last use in the rain. Something or some "factor" maybe remain in the lens motor. When it becomes wet and cold, that will be trigged and the sound will be heard. I wish my GRD will last long... And my experience tells that "it is bad to use this camera in the rain, it is obviously not weather resistant".

Yes, it's certainly not that weather resistant and I suppose the retracting lens mechanism is vulnerable to damp - however, if you don't mind a bit of extra bulk, you could fit the GH-2 adapter with a filter on the end which gives a lot more protection when the camera is in use. Or you could buy a PX (very cheaply) for those days in the rain/snow or on the beach.

I can't hear much that is different to mine, but there could be a subtle difference that the youtube video doesn't let us hear.
Is there a GRD 4 at your local camera dealer that will allow you to compare sounds with?

Hi, the video link is not taken by me. Actually, the sound in the Youtube video is very OK. I cannot record my camera sound, as I don't have other devices; what's more, I think it is not important. As long as the camera works, that sound is not that annoying.

It is very cold at my city. It seems raining all the time. When I use the camera outside, I can often here the strange sound. :(
Once I come back to my house, turn on the heater, no strange sound will be heard any more. :)
