Hi Tim,

Yes, the high pressure we had over the weekend has collapsed very quickly and there is now a deep low pressure tracking across the UK. In the northern hemisphere the winds go anti-clockwise around the low which is unusual in that the centre of the track is over the middle of the UK rather than tracking just to the north of Scotland....this southerly tracking is due to the jet stream running further south than usual. The worst of the weather will be to the south but up here we will get strong north-easterly winds which will pick-up more moisture running off the sea so it will continue to be wet. The trees are stil in full leaf so there is likely to be some damage to them from the wind.

You did ask.....! My apologies for this British obsession.

Yes, wind directions for the same pressure system are reversed in each hemisphere...so in the north low pressure produces an anti-clockwise circulation, high pressure produces a clockwise circulation and in the south it's the opposite.

Well we've had about 30 hours of rain and some strong winds too - however parts of the country have had it much worse.

The wheel barrow was blown on to its 'feet' some time early on Tuesday morning so that's what the rain fall looks like when it's caught...OK it's not a guage but it is standing at 6 inches/15 cms at its deepest.

'Loch Balnakyle' is actually a field of winter wheat...that's just rain water not a flood due to a river bank bursting.

Well done with the accurate weather forecast Richard. It has rained very heavily down here in Yorkshire. Section of the A1 near Dishforth and up past Darlington were closed, along with the East Coast mainline. Many flooded homes and a lot of misery caused by the water. We had a hard time driving down the M1 to Cambridge on Monday, with lorry spray reducing visibility to near zero.

I think we'll get some calmer weather now for a little while at least.

Yes, North East England really copped it - very sad to see all those flooded homes (again!) and I think there was a narrow boat that submerged in York?

I've attached a snipped picture (naughty!) from the BBC of the Footdee foam for the non-UK readers....this show foam blown off the North Sea on Tuesday in to part of Aberdeen.

Also water goes down the sink in the opposite direction down here too. Coriolis force. I'll try to get an image of this.
