Steve Huff's GXR Review

Very positive review. I think I can agree with all Steve's conclusions ;) GXR (Ricoh general) video support is sad. I think the only chance for finally useful Video mode lies in the lens mount module, which would offer the possibility to change the aperture and focus while filming the video. It won't be easy to use, but definitely better than current state. On the other hand, both existing A12 modules deliver exceptional quality photos in very small package and with easy to use UI.

Interesting review.

The 'HD Cinema' module is an interesting idea, moreso than a projector or harddrive module, IMO. Who says a camera module has to take still pictures?

Should we expect this in 2012?

I think probably this is the first unbiased review of Ricoh by a internet fame site/reviewer, who really understood what GXR concept is. Its glad to see, GXR is finally grabbing attention and getting praise it deserves.

I've read the review with pleasure. Can hardly wait till the 28mm hits the Netherlands market (no signs yet unfortunately).

I don't fully agree that the small lensors are useless though. Yes for IQ they are no match but versatility is a different story. I still intend to buy the 28mm together with the p10, so that if I need a tele lens then I have that and I think the p10 beats having a second camera like the CX with me.

Anyway I think this is positive news for Ricoh!

Now also PhotographyBlog reviewed the GXR A12 28mm: http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/ ... 12_review/

Also positive review. Main complaint is the high price and some nagging that f/2.5 is not fast enough compared to DSLR 28mm alternatives.

although perhaps less satisfying is the maximum aperture of F/2.5, a little slower than some 28mm lenses for DSLR systems which typically offer F/1.8 wide-open, or F/2.8 at significantly less cost.

Wrong I would say since there are no APS-C faster 28mm equiv lenses to my knowledge. Only with full frame you can get a faster 28mm lenses. The rest (including m4/3, Samsung NX) is all f/2.8 max.

Ha, very strange wish for faster 28mm lens! Even f2.5 is in my opinion pretty impressive for such focal angle? It does not make much sense to have the wide lens much faster. But maybe I'm overlooking something obvious?

Yes, the people who are complaining about f/2.5 on a $700 lens module are being ridiculous. For 28mm on a DSLR, f/2.8 is the norm while anything faster is expensive and not as common. For Rangefinders... CV makes / made two ... 1.9 and 2.0, but they are large lenses and Leica makes an f/2... which is crazy expensive. People will always complain about wanting faster lenses, higher iso, cheaper stuff... it's bullshit really.

I visited Steve's GXR review and he has been updating his opinions on the comments threads. And he had more nice things to say about the GXR 28 and 50, in comparison to the Pentax K5:

I agree. I am no longer a DSLR fan AT ALL. I just can not shoot with a DSLR. I am testing the Pentax K5 and am having a hard time getting to like it. NOT because it is not a killer DSLR but because I just do not like shooting DSLR’s anymore, AT ALL. PLUS, the Ricoh and 28/50 module deliver better performance (IQ WISE) than the Pentax with a limited prime lens. Out of all of the smaller cameras out there, the GXR has been my fave IQ wise of any of them. Also, strongest feeling construction of any of the small cameras.

Well, I've never owned a Pentax (or any DSLR for that matter) before but Im pretty happy with the GXR and my 28mm unit. The image quality is superb. :D

Cheers!

that is correct ( http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/ricoh_gxr_a12_review/conclusion/ ) but they find the Fuji x100 much better: http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/fujifilm_finepix_x100_review/conclusion/

I didn't get it but anyway for me they (X100 and GXR) are not comparable... the only camera that the X100 has to beat is the Leica X1.

I am pretty sure that the authors were already in love with the X100 before it got reviewed. Their coverage was much more enthusiastic the the X100 when compared to pretty much every other camera.

Saying that I do love the idea of the X100 too but the fact it doesn't show focus through the OVF is a slight let down.

Professional reviews of the X100 seem to be all in favour. That combined with (possibly enduring) scarcity is going to make it something of a legend. Maybe it's because nobody wants to be the odd man out of the crowd. I used to be a stock analyst and it's hard to go against the crowd. If you're wrong, then you look the lonely fool. If you're right but the market disagrees, then again you look the lonely fool. If you're right, but readers that have never tried the camera see you're the odd man out, they discount you. I can tell you that it is not quite perfect. It falls short of a film rangefinder or (D)SLR in response time. The GRD3 remains a superior street shooter, being always ready for a snapfocus snapshot, having a longer battery life, being less obtrusive, having a better grip shape and you spend less time navigating menus as you set up for a shot (if you want more than full-auto). If Voigtländer (or Ricoh) made the Konur accessory finder in 28mm it would be a lethal combination with the GRD.

X100 Updates: I have since been set straight about focussing. There is a EOVF magnification patch, but it's still not great. I have also been told/ figured out that you can customise the EOVF display, but you have to select the custom version with your eye actually up to the finder window and it still doesn't resize the framelines if you strip it bare.

Back to the GXR, I have a feeling we're in for a GXR2 to go with the M-Mount in Autumn.

Another vote for a HD Cinema module. Video capability is the only thing stopping me from letting my m4/3rds gear go for the GXR. Until then I will be content with my E-PL2 & GRD I combo.....

Yes! Please post it everywhere, maybe it helps. I went for the GXR. And for Video I hope a module will be there soon. (Maybe the M-Mount bring some good video funktions) or I have to go for the NEX-7 end of the year...
