Soft Case SC-65B/T

So - meanwhile I took a look myself at a local dealer. Unfortunately I am not impressed.
It starts with the color. It is really looking very similar ot the pictures Ricoh presented:

http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/option/case/

The color is to light and does not fit properly to the GXR - IMHO. I would prefer a dark brown or black. Another issue with the color is, it looks to get dirty very quickly.
The bottom piece of this set is mounted - as usual - to the pod mount. On the right side it fits very well. On the left side it is on a small piece of leather, hold in position by the strap. BTW - a fitting strap is included. So far so good it is not that bad.
BUT with the top cover it starts. First it is made to cover every module, even the A12 50mm. So for anybody decided - as me - owning a real compact camera this case tunes it into opposite.
The top cover is fixed to the bottom part by 4 poppers.1 at the bottom, 2 at the back and 1 one at the left.
And here the technical issues are starting. This type of "Standby-Case" is usually designed to be released and closed quickly. To open 3 poppers first to release the top seems to much to be released really quickly. When you release the top cover then, you realize the case is not really soft. The cover still stays half in front of the lense. I tried to bend it down a bit, but then the last bottom popper release easily and the top cover fall down. So practically it seems the option is only to use the bottom part of the case and keep the top case stored somewhere when you expect to make pictures.
The bottom cover seems to protect the GXR body a bit more than it is originally protected itself. So in general it is looking to be an alternative to the standard kubical cases, but nothing more.
So I am a bit disappointed, as I know it is possible. I own such a type of case for a Contax TVS III and it works very well.

The Hirano Case is pretty nice.
It has a detachable back cover, feels soft but well made and looks nice (black).

It DOES add a bit to the size and it makes changing modules a hassle, but thats with every half case :)

I wasn't aware about this. Looks not too bad. But is there an additional top case? I am not so scared about bottom scratches, more about the the top controls and the lens unit.

If the Ricoh case is in fact real leather, than the given 'wash; is perfect. I only say this because the natural RAW light leather wears the most. After months of being thrown in and out of boxes, benches, bags what have you- the colour will wear naturally to a darker brown. People often buy wallets, belts, watches in this colour so they can achieve a natural wear pattern relative to their [ab]use.

SEE http://www.itsworn.com/ for examples of how leather wears.

The Hirano case is nice but is pretty expensive - I ordered the bottom half of the Ricoh case to see what it's like. If it's a suede-like material, it should be easy to change the color of it to black or brown either with dye or with regular shoe polish.

I was wondering what kind of strap it came with and asked popflash. They say it's the same color as the case, and it's not the same as the Ricoh ST-3 strap.

Ok this case just made it in to me yesterday. It is made of a smooth tan leather, shiny finish, not suede. So it's going to be hard to change the color. Also, the flap on the left side doesn't stay in place on its own at all. It flops around, so in order to use this case you'd need to have a shoulder strap. The screw on the bottom to attach the case is pretty tall, but it also accepts a tripod because it's threaded on the bottom. So don't count on getting a level photograph if you set this on a table.

The case is fairly heavy, which I wasn't expecting, because there is a metal plate embedded in the bottom part and in the grip side to make the case more rigid.

I am sending it back though because I was hoping to use a hand strap with it, and this is not possible due to the design on the lens side.

really? could you take a photograph of your GXR using just the rear part of the case?
I would be really interested in buying it from you as it is unavailable here :(

Hi Kanzlr.

Unfortunately I've already sent it back just last night. If you have any other questions about it though I am happy to elaborate.

I am going to try the Ricoh case. It seems to be the only one that will allow changing lens modules without removing the case. That I think is essential unless you are using only one module. I do wish it was available in black though.
