Skin Color Tone

Hello!

(English is not my mother tongue.)

I'm not completely sure if I am satisfied with the color tones of the new Ricoh GR, specially on the skin, on the border between brighter and darker parts of it.

Please have a look on the attached picture. I find it goes too abrupt from bright to dark. One can see the "border", almost like artifacts.

Do you think, this is normal? Is it the same with your cameras?

I'm using LR 4.4, DNG files (standard settings), not manipulated, on a Mac 10.6.8.

Thanks!

That's an interesting find. Have you noticed a similar result in other images, other lighting situations?

It has happened also with other images, more or less depending on the lighting situation, but that doesn't matter really, it happens!

Do others have the same problem?

I bought the camera online and still could send it back, but not if others have the same problem. Then it would be normal for this camera.

After reading your comment and testing I encountered the same problem with skin tones. The transition from darker to lighter areas isn't gradual, but quiet abrupt. It seems to be a bug of the DNG format. With JPEGS the effect isn't that obvious. tested with Lightroom 4, Silkypix and Iridient Developer. I tried to tweak White Balance, Contrast, etc. but only with marginal success. Here one example taken at ISO 3200, dng directly converted to jpeg, it's a 100% Crop:

I'm wondering whether this has to do with the 12 bit color depth of the Ricoh GR instead of 14 bit in combination with the missing AA Filter??

I notice it too, but only on JPEGS...usually with the Hi-Contrast B&W image setting applied.

To me, it occurs with both DNGs and JPEGs.

Can someone tell me, whether it is known that Ricoh employees regularly visit this forum and read about the problems here?

And: That's my first Ricoh. What are your experiences with Ricoh? Do you people think, that such a problem can be easily solved in future firmware updates?

Thanks.

I cut some off your post so that I could address the part I need to.

It actually does matter how this happens as to image, lighting, ISO jpeg and or raw.
In order to find the problem, we must find the variables that are consistent from camera to camera.

That's why I posted a picture. On it you can see how the photo was taken.
The photo of the other poster was taken under different conditions and also shows these artifacts.

Here another example of the problem I'm having. It happens there, where the skin starts to get darker (on the transition from bright to dark).

The second picture was enhanced, so that you can see it even better. You can see on the right side of the cheek that the shadow looks more like "freckles" or "flecks", like grey dots, which this child definitely doesn't have.

Anyone noticing this too?
