Scarred drummer (Zeiss Planar 50mm/2, ISO 3200)

This shot was taken at the same gig as the one of the other drummer and the bass player. It's shot at ISO 3200.

I must confess that I get a bit annoyed at the complaining of many people with regard to noise: "I don't use my EOS 5D Mark II (or other good low light camera) over ISO 800, because the files are utterly unusable."

While I wouldn't use the GXR-M as my low light camera of choice, and must concede that there are camera's that are better at high ISO settings, I do not think that high ISO shots from the GXR-M are completely useless. I use the camera up to ISO 1600 without reservation, and am willing to shoot at 3200 if necessary. Lightroom does a good job on fixing these files. But then again, I was already satisfied with a 20D at ISO 3200...

I am of the opinion that people who keep complaining about "noise" and "useless images" should be forced to shoot ISO 3200 film for a month. If developed correctly, you can almost sand boards with it.

I am also astounded how much some demand a perfectly smooth noiseless image. To a degree I guess it depends on the final use.

Photography technology is a set of compromises to me.
Photography is a bit like the old adage of "cheap, fast, good" pick any two.

I have also concluded its compounded by taste which varies from viewer to viewer to all extremes. There is no right or wrong, but what concerns me is the crowd that say its useless may only be doing that because others say it. You must have your own opinion -- IMO

These days its about content to me, the image has little merit if the content is not there. I almost don't even consider noise anymore.

I think this drummer image is well within my tolerance, the noise while there, is very good compared to as you say "film days". Consider the size of the camera you used, we certainly have it good these day.
A print would look wonderful I am sure.

Ow, scrap. I forgot to convert the profile of the crop to sRGB. Didn't see it in my color managed Firefox, but I do notice it on my tablet. Will fix it tomorrow.

Thanks for your comments :) Applying more noise reduction would smear the image. I think this is a good compromise, and as you say, in a print a lot of the remaining noise would disputem disappear.

Hi, riccadonna. It's a RAW file, with noise reduction by Lightroom 4.

Phase One had a 40% off offer last week. I've used Capture One 3.x and 4.x in the past, and actually like the workflow better than Lightroom. (In those days, Lightroom didn't even exist, and C1 bested any other converter on the market.) Nowadays, C1 and Lightroom are very comparable in quality and features (except Lightroom can also do picture management), but Lightroom beats the living lights out of C1 (and most other options too) with regard to noise reduction capability. Therefore I passed on switching back to C1. It was tough to resist, but the GRX does need good noise reduction over ISO 1600, no denying that...
