Sal Rei (Boavista, Cape Verde)

A series of images I shot during a holiday on Boavista, one of the Cape Verde islands.
Boavista itself is not a very attractive island. Its flat and barren. Lots of sand. In fact, sand only.
I won't bore you with pictures from the hotel where we stayed. I hope these pictures from a visit to the neighbouring village Sal Rei are more interesting.

1. Bubista is the name of the coach of the national football team. Cape Verde made history by qualifying for the World Cup 2026. "Di bairro pa mondo" means "From the community to the world".

2. Cape Verde is still very poor. However, the boom in tourism brings in money and the luxury hotels are important employers. The progress is visible on the streets, more luxury taxis and so.

3. Lots of shops for the tourists, quite a few run by merchants from Senegal as are the goods they sell. Ever wondered why all the shirts have number 10? Cape Verde comprises of ten islands, that's why.

4. The streets are badly paved and a mess. In some places an attempt at colorful street art.

8. Not really a welcoming venue. "No stress" is the motto of the Cape Verdeans. Nice, friendly people they are.

10. "Fidju Di Téra" in this case means "Authentic product from the islands".
