S10 + HA3 Bug?

Wiener

Just thought I would flag this up for wider comment.
Whilst shooting with the S10 + HA3 + TC1, I encountered a problem which ocurred several times in the space of a few minutes. When shooting the pictures kept coming out under-exposed and it seemed to result from the EV being automatically reduced in value.
I post these two images which I kept, just in case someone can figure out what was going on. The second photograph resulted from me manually pushing the EV value back to more normal levels.
Cheers!
Andy
PS not sure if the 'vignette' is relevant, this resulting from me using the S10 unit one step back from the full 135mm tele.

I never experienced anything like that, but the truth is I'm not using the S10 much in these days and even less with TC1. Could you please send me both files (JPEG is enough) in their original size so I can analyze their exifs?

I never experienced such problems with the GX100/200/S10 and the TC-1. The vignetting definitely results from stepping back from maximum focal length.
Best regards, Gerd

Image taken on: Wed Dec 01, 2010 9:12 pm
Focus length: 19.74 mm
Shutter speed: 1/2000 Sec
F-number: F/12.4
ISO speed rating: 100
Flash: Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
Camera-model: GXR S10
Exposure program: Shutter priority
Exposure bias: -33/10 EV
Metering mode: Center-weighted average

This looks a litle bit weird to me (boldfaced data) in these dark times, particularly at ISO 100. Maybe, you simply had wrong settings??? What about trying P mode?
Gerd

Good point Gerd! There indeed could be a problem with the shutter speed priority? 1/2000 combined with f12.4 sounds definitely wrong for anything but super bright conditions? However, -3.3EV exposure compensation is really weird.

BTW Andy, what's your actual state of the Shutter Speed Auto Shift option?

Just as an update on this previously reported phenomenon; I have now experienced three times this week a similar experience with my A12 28mm. Without reason, the EV has dropped to -4.0 whilst shooting in programme mode. I attach one of the photographs for information.
I am currently running the most recent firmware on both camera and lens. As before, the viewfinder suddenly darkened as I framed the picture, so am confident it was not 'pilot error' on these occasions!
As it is not a commonly reported fault (?), does this suggest a hardware rather than a software glitch?
Comments welcome!
Andy

PS I have also experienced one 'total hang' which required battery removal and replacement to solve. However, as this is a common occurrence with my GX100, I am not so much in a sweat over this! ;)

Hi Wiener,

I don't think that I can contribute much useful information here. My A12-28 had the opposite issue from the beginning: overexposure from time to time and happening more or less randomly (at least to me)... After the recent firmware update it did not yet reappear, but you never know, of course...
The only useful information from the last firmware update that you might want to verify is the following text passage from Ricoh:
A12-28mm: The exposure may not be correct in the following condition; after taking a picture in well lit area, then immediately turning the camera off and on and taking another picture.

With respect to the hangs of the 28-300 I have to admit that they also appeared absolutely randomly. But after Easter, even with the new firmware, I had an awful lot of them, often one after the other (I also had to remove the battery and also slided the module out a little bit).

As I had dropped my GXR with the 28-300, I sent both to repair two weeks ago. The 28-300 returned within a week, that's good news, but I cannot check it, because the body still waits for replacement parts, that's the bad news. Anyway, the hang did -- of course -- not materialize in Pirmasens at the repair center. Nonetheless, they observed a problem and replaced the logic board. So, let's wait and see, whether that cured the issue...

Best regards, Gerd

Hi Gerd,
I think you could be onto something there...it was most likely that I had just turned on the camera again, though it was last used in a poorly lit area. Mostly it happens when the camera is pointed towards a contrasty scene. It certainly happened AFTER the firmware update, so if anything the effect seems to have worsened. However, as with these things, it may be some time before it occurs again! ;)
All the best, and good luck with your 'baby' on its return!
Andy
