S10 24-70mm Infrared conversion

Hi

I wonder, if anyone has performed any internal IR conversion on this unit. By the way, I have with good success! I have sold a few such units to friends and also one to a Professional Photographer through ebay, who has given me his permission to put his website here for everyone to evaluate the results. Take a look and enjoy!!!

Really interesting work.
Have you evaluated which is the reduction in exposure time after removing the IR filter?
Does it cost a lot?
Have you tried with other modules?
Why have you chosen to implement the IR blocking filter removal in the S10?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Albert

Thanks for your comments and questions!

I have no secrets like most of USA companies will have and not tell you what they really do in their conversion process of your camera for you!

I happen to stumble across this web site on Google one day, somehow, and was inspired by it! I have always liked a challenge, so here was my chance! As far as I know there is only one person who has done this conversion on S10, this person is, I think is from China and has even put some photos to show the precise conversion process, a very clever person, I must say - here is the link:

S10 conversion takes place with extreme precision. The internal filter is taken out and replaced by IR filter of your choice. One can perform this kind of work, oneself, if one can afford to risk the cost of S10 unit and have access to the appropriate tools. After conversion, one has to make sure that one's GXR's Macro setting is set to "On" (this is how you do it: Menu/ Auto Macro = set it to "On"). The focus comes as razor sharp and Macro works a treat! In my opinion this is an ideal lens for such a conversion, being such a small unit with huge possibilities of endless fun!!!

As far the other questions, yes, I have done conversions on various cameras like, Sony, Canon G series, Pentax etc. S10 conversion was unique, for me, as none of the USA companies will take on this work.

In my opinion, if the conversion is performed in a precise manner with absolute dedication and no dust around, it actually is a simple procedure and works extremely well. The results have been, as one can see, from Rob Lowe's work, who is a Professional Photographer in Scotland who has used 3 different units with 695nm, 800nm and 600nm filters respectively. Here is his website again:

Thanks again Albert for your comments. If I can be of any help, feel free to send me a message either privately or on the forum.

Very Best wishes

Thanks Amar.
Some more questions:
Could you leave the S10 without any internal filter and use external IR filters (such as Hoya R72 (720nm) or RM90 (900nm)), or even external IR blocking filter (as the M8) to revert to standard spectrum colors? In this manner one S10 unit is enough and you can trim the cut frequency with different external filter instead of different S10 units... :?:

When I asked if you has implemented this with other modules I was thinking in other GXR modules, such as the A12-50 or A12-28 or even A12-M... :?:

Why do you need to fix the Automacro? if not there are focus issues? Does the unit focus to infinity? :?:

Thanks again.

Hi Albert

Are you in Spain? I am too on a holiday at present!

Anyway. Could you leave S10 without an internal filter? Why not, this would be my next experiment, but if you beat me to it, please do let me know how you got on. In theory, it should work with a glass filter replacement which will give you ability to take photos hand held GXR, I am not quite sure whether without a replacement of clear glass filter will give you handheld GXR ability, Need to try it out!!! I know for a fact that Canon G9 without internal filter does give you hand held ability.

No, I have not done any internal conversions on any of the other modules yet - I am tempted to perform one on A12M, one day, will keep you posted if you like. Do you know if anyone has done it so far?

Why do one need to change the software on GXR to Auto Macro to "On", it is do with the altered wavelength due to altered internal IR filter. Autofocus will not work properly, otherwise. One can leave the Auto Macro to "On" once in for all and the converted unit will focus to Infinity and to Macro without any issues at all.

Ask Rob Lowe, if you like as he is the one who has used these units extensively, I am sure he will not mind at all.

Any further queries, feel free!
