Red Circles in underexposed pictures

I would disagree and say that it does come up in normal shooting, for me anyway.
But then again, I like to lift shadows and have a low contrast high dynamic range flat image.
Do you find it to be problematic or is it something that doesn't really bother you that much?

Not feeling good about this issue again...

Terrific. Two things happened today: My GR was delivered, and I found this thread on the forum. For me, the problem is that at least 95% of what I shoot is HDR, usually 5 exposures. Guess I will need to experiment to learn if the problem rears its ugly head in my workflow--I'll send the camera back if it does. I appreciate the "heads up"--had I been unaware, I might not have spotted the issue in time to get a refund.

Looks to me like there's a gap in the market for a parabolic sensor which doesn't need progressive filtering from the centre to the edges.

It'll be pricey though, as advances in camera technology always are. ;)

Meantime, the physical limits of big sensor to compact body will continue to be pushed by software, more or less successfully. The harder the photographer pushes the limits of the technology, the more artifacts will show up. Most manufacturers limit the ability of the user to push the envelope.

Ricoh, on the other hand, lets the photographer find the edge, and use their creativity and skill to stay just within it. Having said that, it'd be handy to have an off button for this particular filter IMO. I don't think a slight vignette would have detracted from Reluff's candle lit shot for example.

Thanks for your response, appreciate it.
In total, are the actual amount of images many with this problem, considering it's a frustrating thing for you?

I agree with you, I'd rather have a vignette than those rings. I could totally live with that.

This is so annoying, I really want this camera, if it weren't for those rings I'd have one ordered already.
I have looked around a bit and seen this on other images too, luckily they aren't many so far.
I don't know, have to think about this for a few days.
The thing is, after doing my research earlier in my quest for a pocketable camera, I don't really think there are any better options offered by other brands. For a while I was looking at the FujiFilm X100s, but the Ricoh GR just seems to fit me a little better, it's a gut feeling.
Every camera will have it's issues I guess, and maybe I just should take a chance with this one and see where it takes me. The fact that there are so many images from the Ricoh GR where I haven't seen this issue on will probably be a big factor in my decision.
Other than that, there's always the hope for a firmware release that will take care of it, making it a user option whenever to use it or not. :)

Reeluff: Thanks for your reassurance, and further explanation. My camera is unboxed, and I will begin shooting test shots this weekend, hoping for good results!

reeluff, never mind the bloody colored rings. What I`m really worried about is these dreadful white, oval blobs in your photos. Is this one of those famed Fuji X20 white orbs case? If so I´ll wait til Ricoh fixes it.

Stanislaw, you mean those painted over faces? They are called self-censorship. ;)

Peter

Peter, I see. He could use an anonymous mask or just ask the models to turn they faces away
p.s. seriously, Ming Thein who`s a professional and who carries GR as his always to have cam never mentioned the circle issue.
I still am considering GR but... my GXR A28 has no issues of the kind.

reeluff - don't care about those "funny dudes", we appreciate what you are doing.

I too have finally seen those dreaded circles.
Took a shot yesterday when the sun was coming down just to see how the GR managed to capture the colors, and there they were.
So far I have been shooting quite a lot in the 1600-3200 range and haven't noticed them. Let's see how common it will be when I'm shooting more daylight.

Right now I'm looking for some analog gear and will probably soon have a Pentax K1000 or a Nikon FE. That has nothing to do with the circles, so far I really like the GR and it's definitely a keeper. :)

Just take it easy Tony Reeluff. If you can`t take a bit of fun so tell the world in a straight way. Ricoh Forum is friendly site where of course we are supposed
to be nice to each other. Just relax. Funny Dude

reelufff, I appreciate what you doing too. This issue is really a serious one and I hope that mr. Ming Thein and all others will help us with this problem. Peace and love. Stanislaw

I do a lot of shots with 2sec or more exposure where I move the camera during shooting. Then I do a fair bit of fiddling in Lightroom. I often push exposure far more than is reasonable and I have often come across the Red Circles. In this shot I thought I'd use them as an added texture in what was a silhouette at the bottom of the image.
