R7 file sizes

Hello All

Just getting to grips with a new R7. I've set the image size to 3264 x 2448 (Fine), and was expecting an image size of around 8Mb. But they are all less than 3Mb (smaller than my old Pentax Optio 550). Has anyone else experienced this, or am I doing something stupid?

Or should I not be asking this type of question here?

Hello Scallion and welcome here! Why did you expect 8MB? The JPEG file size depends on level of compression. And there is also some noise reduction done over the photos (before saving them to JPEG). This additional process removes some of the noise and tiny details from the photos and makes them easier to compress.

Hi odklizec & thanks for welcome.

I'm familiar with jpeg compression, just curious why the Ricoh (with 8MP , 3264 x 2448 picture size) ends up with a file size < 3MB, in comparison with the Pentax (5MP 2592 x 1944 pic size) which has a file size typically > 3MB on best quality. Is there a quality setting I am missing on the Ricoh?

(I took the 8Mb figure from the Ricoh online manual, page 69 I think)

I'm afraid, there are no other quality settings, than these F3264(8M), N3264(8M) and similar. This is why you were probably confused? The setting F3264(8M) does not mean 8MB but 8Megapixels!

The reason why your old 5MB camera produces larger photos is definitely in different JPEG compression and/or noise reduction. For example, my Olympus E400 produces in (best JPEG) about 6MB files, while R8 only 3.5MB. I have no doubt that R8 uses higher level of JPEG compression and stronger NR.

I still believe that one day we will get RAW option in R cameras. I don't need or expect aperture or manual mode in R cameras. But RAW would be extremely helpful! I just prefer my way of image processing, with very low or no NR.
