Pentax Lens

The converter for Pentax to Leica m arrived today. Just a few shots before it got too dark on a very overcast day. The orchid was taken indoors on a tripod at 4 meter distance 450mm lens equivalent (lens at maximum ie 300mm) with dof of about 2 cm( lens wide open) The goose was taken outside on the lawn hand held and I do not know the focal length.
Focusing is certainly not easy, I appreciate the posts describing in detail the camera set up. These were taken with focus 1. I picked this particular lens because it is all plastic for the barrel, has reasonable reviews and is LIGHTWEIGHT.

Well done shots, indeed !
#1 is my favorite.

(BTW: I prefer Modus 2 to focus the lens on M-Module)

Cheers,
JONIE

Thanks Jonie. I am now trying out focus 2. I need to figure out how to put it on fn1 or 2. The lens and I spent 30 minutes today doing experiments. One conclusion is, do not use the infinity setting for focusing at a distance as it is incorrect. I suspect that the physics of the crop factor screw up the distance scale on manual focus lenses designed for 35mm cameras. Since this was a busy day and daylight is short I did not make further experiments, tomorrow perhaps. I also have the C V 15mm f4.5 to experiment with but the dof is so great it may be hard to come to exact conclusions. What is your experience with the distance scales?

Hi Patty
The lens is a SMC Pentax-FA 1:4.7-5.8 100-300mm, probably purchased at too high a price, $200 US. I just compared it at 300mm and wide open with my wife's Nikon 80-300. She has the sharper lens at the extreme when comparing a 1 to 1 crop. But for 1/3 the price and 1/2 the weight I will give it a whirl. At lower magnifications and larger f stops they are pretty comparable. I am looking to obtain a Pentax 50mm f1.4 M lens .

Thanks Peter,

I have been looking for a zoom lens for the M module. Given the crop factor I guess this becomes 200-450, which is huge! Do you have any other zoom lenses that you use with the M module? I'm hoping to find something that may work out as a 35-100 ish once the crop factor has been taken into account.

Peter, I am not familiar with these lenses. Do you have to buy an adaptor to use with the m mount and if so what sort. Also, is the lens very big once it is in the Ricoh?

Patty

Thanks for the info, it has been really really usefully. I have tried to reply to your pm directly but at the moment it still seems to be sitting in my outbox not my sent box, so thought I would just add a big thank you here.

Well this time it is a Tokina lens with a Pentax mount. 400mm F5.6 with tripod collar and doubler. A bit soft ( but so is my old Summitar) but usable. Bought really for birds.
One shot is a my bird feeder taken 8 meters away , the second shot 1/2 kilometer away. This long lens with the doubler has a very narrow dof and is subject to the lightweight carbon fiber tripod vibrating, so all exposures are with the remote and in the case of the one across the river a ten second delay. Their seems to be a marginal advantage to the doubler, the effective focal length is 1200. It is extremely sensitive to movement. Today was overcast so not a lot of light. The "new" lens was bought on ebay at a reasonable price.

This time a used Sigma lens with Pentax mount, the 105mm f2.8 with 1:1 macro. Now my wife, who is a Nikon shooter, after seeing the macro photos wants a smilar lens for her camera. No economy in this family by buying a used lens :D
First shot, not cropped, jade plant flower (Crassula ovata) about 14mm across, Second shot a local boat leaving for sea to go drag for shrimp in the morning snow

It seems that I missed this thread...
The big lensens seems to be working good on the GXR :D
My favorite is winter Goldfinch.jpg. The bird-eyes are good sharp! Well done.
Jad flower f16.jpg is fantastic also.

Wow, what great pictures! I love the winter Goldfinch and the shrimp boat leaving on the others...

Silly goose, winter Goldfinch, and Shrimp boat leaving are my favourites here - fantastic work indeed!

Lovely pictures, specially the goldfinches.

Incidentally for anyone wanting to try using Pentax leses with the A12 M mount and adapter, old lenses are best as you need to set the aperture manually as well as focus. The recent DA lenses do not have an aperture ring.

It seems Novoflex have come up with a solution for Pentax lenses that has the aperture control built into the adapter -- does anybody have any experience with that thing?

Also, I'm curious as to how the A12 sensor copes with the distance between sensor and lens introduced by an adapter for SLR lenses: How is IQ? How does the micro-lens correction on the sensor even cope with that kind of unexpected flange distance? I've tried to see for myself: Searched Flickr etc. -- but can only ever find a handful of pictures taken with the combination "A12 and Pentax lens" (mostly heavily edited ones, too). I guess my question is: Any educated guesses as to using old Pentax lenses on the A12? Can I expect similar results like on my (slightly outdated) Pentax DSLR -- i.e., very, very, very sweet results?
