There was a thread going on another forum about digging deep into the menu system of Ricohs (specifically the GRDlll and the GXR). Now my belief system told me that if you are using RAW that it does not matter what other settings you use (maybe EV only, not sure) but they will not be captured in the RAW file. So if you are shooting RAW why go to the trouble of digging deep to try to get something you can get when PP your RAW file? Please help me understand this, I think I do but want a double check?

Thanks

Joel

You know Joel, not everyone is using RAW ;) I think GXR A12 is especially good example when the RAW is often not needed, mainly at low ISO values. And with some detailed image settings you might be able to achieve some nice results that does not require additional processing. See for example these two photos:

I was so happy with JPEG that I did not even try to process the DNG. I'm not sure I would be able to achieve similarly good result in RAW editor?

The small sensor cameras are completely different story. Their JPEG (except the GRDI) is nearly useless for anything than small prints and web images. But if processed with in-camera JPEG engine and detailed settings, it could serve as a template for DNG processing. One can try to achieve the same result in RAW editor.
