Hi there.

New to the forum so please be gentle, am really pleased to have found this wonderful resource. Apologies if this is a very easy/straightforward question to have to answer:

I am a recent purchaser of an M mount module for my trusty GXR, having only had the Ricoh lens modules before now. I want to mount a Jupiter 12 35mm lens which has an M39 mounting, and wonder if there is a specific adaptor I need to buy? I have seen a few available quite cheaply but they all seem to have specific (different) lenses mentioned in the details of the advert, and I am little confused as to whether any M39 - M adaptor will accommodate any lens with an M39 mounting arrangement, or do I have to buy a specific adaptor for each different M39 mount lens I might want to use (say one for a 35mm and a different type of one for a 135mm lens)? I am in the UK so any suggestions on where best to buy the adaptor from? I see a few on the usual auction site that are all coming from China and was a) slightly concerned about quality and b) wanting to avoid import duties.

Thanks for any advice anyone can provide.

Hi, and welcome

Answering your question - any L39 - LM adapter will fit your lens and module. Numbers on adapter are important once you use it with a rangefinder camera.

Good luck

... on a Leica M rangefinder, the camera can 'sense' the lens, in order to display the framelines corresponding to the framelines (so that you know what will be in the picture and what will be outside it). The lenses have differently shaped backs for the camera to be able to do this. The adapters are thus shaped like specific lenses' backs.

For the GXR M, this is pretty much irrelevant (come to think of it: this is a pity! The GXR M could have recorded some more EXIF data!).

Here's a thought, however: why not buy the right adapter anyway (suppose you want to sell the combo at some point)? Also, I would try and avoid cheap Chinese stuff: wobble in the lens or lens comes off at an unlucky moment and you will regret you didn't spend a couple dollars more (and holding the camera by the lens, even the camera could drop).

Hope this hells a bit with the decision -- ymmv, of course.

Many thanks to you both for the very helpful replies. I understand now about the adaptor and will search around for a decent one to get.

Thanks again!
