New Ricoh GRIV / Ricoh GR4

That is interesting. I wonder what they will change compared to the GR3, if this rumor turns out to be true.

I am really happy with my GR3/ GR3x, except for the screen brightness in sunlight. To improve this, you would need bigger batteries, but this would result in bigger bodies and would eliminate the biggest advantage of the GR.

Press release:

New GR Development Announced

2025.05.22 BLOG
Today, we are thrilled to announce the development of the RICOH GR IV.
You can find the press release here.

Over the past few years, we have received many inquiries from customers asking, " When will the new GR be ready?"

The day has finally come when we can announce that a new GR is indeed in development.

Since the product is still at the development stage, the information we can provide is limited at this time. However, we have published as many specifications as possible.

We have also announced the discontinuation of the production of the RICOH GR III.

Six years have passed since the launch of the current GR III in 2019, and we are still receiving high demand for it from many countries.

It is with great regret to inform you of this news under these circumstances.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to those who have been waiting for the RICOH GR III.

The RICOH GR IIIx will remain available for the time being.

We will do our best to deliver the new GR to as many customers as possible as soon as possible, so please bear with us a little longer.

Product display:
From May 31 (Saturday), GR SPACE in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Beijing will be showcasing samples of the RICOH GR IV, which you can see the appearance of the product. Come and visit GR SPACE to check it for yourself!

*Please note that the exterior designs and other information are current as of the development announcement and are subject to change without notice.
*We cannot answer questions about product specifications other than those communicated in the release. Thank you for your understanding.

Release date for the Ricoh GRIV / 4 is Autumn 2025. That is very early.

I expected a lot later. Not before 2026. The press rease sais, the GR3 (28mm) will not be available anymoee, because they do not have all parts anymoee.

The GR3x is still available though. At least for the time beeing.

The new Ricoh GR IV seems to have a lot in common with the GRIII. But according to Samuel's Video, it is a complete redesign. Internally everything changed.

I am really curious what the differences will be and what tze price of the Ricoh GR4 will be.

The second hand prices of the Ricoh GR3 will probably skyrock now....

I have the x now and I'm not sure I would rather have the 28mm.
Also I don't think the differences between 3 and 4 (specs) are a reason for me to replace my current GR3

It is too early to know whether an upgrade from.Ricoh GR3 to Ricoh GR4 is worth it.

But I assume it is. They changed from SD card to Micro SD card (plus a huge ca. 50GB internal memory). It seems that there is more space now for a bigger battery, which might mean, better brightness for the LCD screen in sunlight.

New sensor in combination with a new lens design might result in even better image quality. The Ricoh GR4 will have 3 aspherical lenses, the Ricoh GR3 has "only" two.

I am excited about this announcement. The Ricoh GR cameras are surely my most important cameras and I use many different systems.

Yes i didnt notice anything outside the published details... maybe he just made it too hastily and wants to edit it?
It's public again i think he edited it shorter, but I cant say for sure, someone would need to ask him about it

Maybe he cut out a short sequence with a detail shot of the outside of the camera,

Does not matter. Most important is that Ricoh sticks to the GR series and continues to improve it.

I am very happy that they keep it in the 24MP range and the body size.

With 40MP this would be a nightmare as an EDC. Noone wants to store and edit many 40MP images. Additionalky 40MP would make the camera slow and it would overheat fast and battery life would be even shorter.

If the size of the Ricoh GR4 body would be bigger, we would use it less and then it would compete with the Fuji X100 and Leica Q. I have a Leica Q3 43 and I really like it. But thanks to its size, the Ricoh GR3 and Ricoh GR 3x are still my most favorite cameras among all my different systems.

These are very much my thoughts also. I got my first gr 2015 (still have it) alongside a X-T1 with the idea that its 2 completely different equipment for different moments, people seem to miss this when they want to compare a X100-series with the GR series.
A 25mp sensor is very good and a 5-axis SR s most likely very good, we'll have to wait and see how it performs.
Also internal storage is sufficent at 52gb and the micro-sd card is understandable as most laptops etc have only a microsd slot if any at all and not a fullsize sd reader, so on that issue I dont say it's neither good or bad.
The EV switch is a super feature that i've been missing on the III-series.
Unfortunetly no flash, but I didnt expect that to come either in this size body, but if the size would have been of the original GR (also of the film GR) then maybe it could have fitted in, this is obviously too late to wish for.

I do think it is prob okay to uppgrade to this, but i understand many says they wont, how much of that is for trying to retain value of their current purchase is, that I do not know.

In overall I think it was good and of timely matter for Ricoh to announce this and if the camera is to be available for orders in 3 months time, then i think the real value for customers is there as the excess hype around it has faded and they can supply it to a customer base that retains the camera series value into the future and the yt influencers that is going to bash this around is going to be fever. So to Ricoh, good job and thank you.

I never used flash, even not at the time when sensors were really bad compared to today.

I think the desire for internal flash dies, the better the high ISO quality of the modern sensor are. So why should Ricoh invest in a dying technology? They need space within the body and they need to keep the costs low.

I will decide about upgrading once I have more information about the changes and the added value for my individual use cases. Of course the price is also a concern.

I like the upgrade cycle of 6 years. 8 years would be fine with me too, if there is no new break through innovation available inbetween.

I agree. I’ve only had my gr 3 for a few weeks, so I’m not heading to the camera shop in August in a hurry! Tbh, this was quite expensive for a guy on my salary. As is, I absolutely adore this little camera. Maybe I’ll consider the gr 4 in a few years.

I have a video here for all of you, to get back into the reasons why probably all of us bought a Ricoh GR, no matter which generation.

I 100% agree with him on this.

Something that hasn’t been commented on a lot is the elimination of the Exposure Compensation rocker switch and the rotary dial, both of which are points of failure on the GR III. I had to send mine to Ricoh for a USD$700 (!!) repair because these two controls malfunctioned during normal and gentle daily handling in and out of my pants pocket.

I’d LOVE a B&W version without Bayer filter, but would still be ecstatic with a new sensor with 2 stops better low-light performance.

I’m definitely picking one up!

I would not recommend to put any kind of camera in a pocket without a camera protection. There is so much dust etc. in a pocket that you will harm the camera sooner or later. No matter which brand. No matter which pocket.

It is the same like taking a camera to the beach without camera protection. Even the slightest wind will put really fine sand into your camera, which you can not see, but feel.

I always carry my GRs with a leathercase. As small as the camera. See another thread about accessories for this. I never had dust issues or other issues.

I got a small edc dyneemabag from a german guy on etsy.(ultralightbags or such?), fits the gr's just fine, even with the filterattachment and a spare battery. Works winter and summer everywhere.
The new version has properties that i do value and depending on the price, I'll most likely switch it later in the fall when it has arrived to stores.
