New Member - need advice on "Snap"

streetstory

New Member
Hi, I'm new on here and I'm based in Blackpool, England.

I'm very interested in street photography and bought a GRD IV last week after hearing so many people say what a great street camera it is. This is the first compact I've owned and also, as I've been using a 40mm lens for the past year I'm finding that my hip shot framing is a bit off.
I love the size and stealthiness of the camera but I'm still finding my way around everything else. My one frustration so far is missing shots that I know I would get with my DSLR. This is the problem:

I'm using aperture priority, I've got focus set to Snap, Snap focus distance at 1m and full press snap set to "on"
I'd say 7/10 times I get a picture but the other times I press the shutter and ........no picture. Any advice would be appreciated.

regards
johnny

Here's your problem.
The way we do it here in NE Philly is this.
Snap Distance set to 1 meter. At this distance you need to be at f/5.6 and that will give you a little over 1/2 meter to infinity in focus.

As you change your snap distance, you need to be at the proper f/stop to get HYPERFOCAL DISTANCE.
I'll put the settings below....ypu, right down there 2 lines.......

4.0 1.5 meters 4.9'
5.6 1.0 meters 3.28'
8.0 .76 meters 2.4'

So you can see that using M Mode and setting the snap distance to the f/stop you want to work in will make the fastest street camera anywhere's.
I use M and Auto ISO. The camera, (Andre') will let me set my aperture, (according to my required DOF...Snap) and shutter speed. Then Andre' will smile and make things right by setting the ISO to make me feel like I know what I'm doing.

The GR does not inherit this user support from the GRD4..... I hope you get my humor. The idea is to get the info into your brain without you feeling like you are lost....

You can pm or email me if you have issues.... Don

Hi Johnny and welcome to the forum.
Don couldn't have explained it any better. I set mine up the same way.
Nice pictures by the way. Can't wait to see some more from your new GRD
Enjoy the camera. Once you get use to it, its hard to put it down.

Cheers,

John

Genster, I don't use My Settings but when you figure it out, I'd appreciate a lesson on using them.
Thank You Sir.

Hey Don,
This worked for me: http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/support/faq/bp/gxr/08/gxr08041.html

Ricoh actually explaining things? Thanks for the link ...

Tom

A whole lot of information on MY Mode setup here:

viewtopic.php?f=53&t=3313

GRDIII specific - read it right through I was feeling my way - I did not update for the GRDIV

Updated for the GR here:

viewtopic.php?f=72&t=10507

I did not do a spreadsheet with suggested settings this time but made a downloadable pdf that can be printed out and used as a template to pencil in your own user settings.

There is also a separate spreadsheet for the GXR My Mode settings and some suggestions.

Don's suggested street shooting modes could easily become a My Mode.

Don,

While I'm happy with the concept of hyperfocal distances I'd not thought of combining snap with manual and auto ISO....I suppose this creates a sort of TAv mode as per the new GR but with the option of specifiying the auto ISO limit and the shutter speed shift? I've had a quick play with this this morning at f4.0 and snap 1.5m and am impressed - especially when I deslected auto DRC which was blowing out the highlights. I've also set positive film and saved the whole lot as MY3 (you know that is easy...just set everything then go to Reg My Settings in the 2nd level menu and select a 'MY' then save...edit to rename the setting).

Anyway, I have to go to the big city today to have something sorted on the car and if they need it for a while will try a bit of snap street.

Richard
