This I like, very good idea!

Hi Ray,

What exactly is your problem? Did you download and unpack the content of FW zip? If you do so, you should get the file rg1_v002.frm .Now simply upload that file to the SD card (either via the card reader or by connecting the camera to your computer).

If you connect the camera to computer, you should see it as a new drive. Then simply move the file rg1_v002.frm to "ricoh" drive (its root). Then disconnect the camera, start it and in the menu search for Confirm Firmware Version (last item in Setup menu). Then confirm overwriting of existing FW with new version and wait for confirmation.

Does not let you what? Execute the FW update? What does it show in "Current Version" and "New Version" text fields?

What exactly and how does this feature work? I do not seem to be able to figure it out.

Is there any warning/error issued? And what does it show in "Current Version" and "New Version" text fields? You should see these fields in "Confirm Firmware Version" menu.

Ray Rainbird: I think the update process is quite straightforward, why don't you attach some screenshots where you seem to fail to update the GR?

I think there is either a problem with unpacking the firmware file from zip or with transfering the file to sd card. This is why I'm still asking for the "Current Version" and "New Version" values displayed by your camera. If there is displayed the same number in both fields and neither of them is 2.03, then the firmware file is most probably not on the sd card or in incorrect folder.

BTW, are you on win8? I've read about some problems with win8 at dpreview forum. I guess these could be a problem with some security measures?

Re: Ricoh GR + GT1 - useful or not?

I'm not sure if unzipping is directly supported by win8? So I guess you first need to install an unpacker? Try for example 7zip, which is free of charge.

Managed to unzip file but still no joy I follow the instuctions but the camera will not update the message I get is the camera telling me that the firmware that came with the camera is installed but gives me no optionto change it to new firmware

How did you transfer the frm file to the SD card? Using a card reader or by connecting the camera to computer (using supplied USB cable)? Did you get an error or warning while transferring the frm file to SD card?

And once again, what are the firmware versions ("Current Version" and "New Version") displayed in "Confirm Firmware Version" camera menu? This is a crucial information to decide if the firmware file was successfully transferred to the SD card or not. If both version numbers are the same and neither of them is 2.03, then the firmware file is most probably not where it should be.

This is what you should see after transferring the frm file to SD card:
