Unfortunately, no news about new FW. To be honest, I don't think there will be any new feature enhancing FW for GX100. The GX line is planned to be under the GRD. So I'm afraid, the maximum we can expect is a bug fixing FW. But I would be more than happy to be proven wrong 
I think R8 is most probably not a match for GX100, mainly due to size of its sensor, different lens and completely different philosophy and end-user orientation. I'm sure it will be a great tool! But definitely not as powerful and versatile as GX100.
