My GXR A12 28mm review

Thank you Vladimir. Nice review - short and clearly written. I enjoyed the photos too.

GXR is together with X1 and X100 on my near future buying list (just ONE camera will be chosen). I am only waiting for Ricoh to announce 35 mm lens mode (I have no idea what are the chances though). I had both X1 and GXR in hand at the same time - the Ricoh felt better made with better controls (the dials of X1 feel way too cheap and rotate too easily - at least to my taste). The size of X1 and GXR with A12 28 mm module is very comparable the Ricoh is heavier (400 g vs 300 g).

So, Ricoh guys, where is the pancake 35/2.0 ... please ... ?

Hi Cris!

Why do you still have reservations for the GXR as a system camera? Is it just that there aren't enough modules out there or is the concept fundamentally flawed?

My reservations are mostly to do with the fact that there simply aren't enough modules out there for it and half of the modules are not very exciting and lag behind most other p&s cameras (the S10 and P10).
The A12 modules are nice but only the 28mm module is really better than what you can get from a entry level dSLR.

The upcoming m-mount module might change all of this though and I hope to see more unique modules that do something no other camera can do.

To be honest for me this statement is true for all system cam's (GXR, M4/3rd, Nex, NX, DP etc etc) image quality from entry level DSLRs is equal or better. Then again entry level DSLR's provide very high quality, it's typically the lens that's the defining factor.

I rate my GXR A12/28 as equal to my Canon 500D with a good lens, but much more portable. And to be honest the lens 28mm GR lens is better than what I have for my Canon DSLR. From what I've seen the A12/50 is in the same league but I don't have hands-on experience.

For me this is the type of categories I've defined:
- Fast action, ultimate flexability, uncompromized quality: DSLR
- Portability and very high quality: system cams
- Portability and acceptable quality: high-end small sensor cams
- Ultimate portability: Smart Phone

The GXR A12/28 combined with the P10 is my combo for versatile low weight trips. Can only be beaten by a 2 camera kit in versatility (28-300 mm range) and quality.

By the way, does anybody ever use the internal flash with the 28mm A12 and the lens hood LH1 on? try it ;-)
