Macro focus

I note that the latest firmware does nothing to improve Macro focus performance. My GRD3 would nail the macro focus every time whereas the GR hunts either side of the obvious focus point, misses it and gives the red display square indicating it can't focus. Except I watched it pass the focus point twice! Would be funny if it wasn't so annoying. On many occasions the only way is to manually focus. Needs fixing Ricoh please...

Hi senzi and welcome here! About your problem, don't forget that the minimal GR macro focus distance is 10cm and not 1cm like in case of GRD3! This is very important difference. So if you are too close to the photographed subject, the camera may hunt for focus like in your case. Another problem could be generally smaller DoF of GR, which means it may be much harder to focus at close distance.

Thanks for the reply - yes I am aware of the difference in min focus distance. I just find it strange watching the GR hunt past what is clearly [to me] the point of focus and back whilst failing to lock at all. Manual focus at the same distance results in a perfect image...

I take a lot of macro images, and when I considered getting the GR I was very doubtful about the 10cm maximum macro limit. I have had the GR for a week now and I am getting use to working within it's macro limits and making use of the "trim" mode in the playback menu when I want a 1/1 result, which is an awesome function.

I always shoot in manual and I always get rapid AF in macro. I wish I could tell you what the difference is between my result and your result, but with so many possible settings on the GR and so much that I do not understand about this camera yet, I am in a very limited capacity to help. All I know is that what I am doing is working for me. Best wishes.

I have never had any problems with Macro focusing, it has always hit focus everytime.

I have noticed that my GR even focuses sharply on landscape images while in Macro mode. It happened when I forgot to switch it out of Macro mode...
