It`s Official: Ricoh buying Pentax!!!!!

This is definitely shocking and very unexpected news! I'm so shocked I can't find my words for this acquisition. On the other hand, it could significantly boost Ricoh position on the market! Pentax has some great lenses and recent DSLRs are very very good. Let's wait and see what fruits will this acquisition bring us? ;)

Hm, I'm not quite sure I like this...
On completion of the Acquisition, Ricoh will begin to use the PENTAX brand name for some of its digital camera products, and HOYA will continue to use the PENTAX brand name for their endoscopes and other products.

On a positive note, Ricoh cameras may finally get a reasonable RAW editor (based on Silkypix) ;)

So, whoever made this mock up before the GXR came out was correct in the end!

Is it a Pentoh or a Rickex ?

Seriously though, I do hope that good things will come from this. I'd rather see the brands merge than either disappear.
I've never been a mad fan of Pentax but I do respect their efforts and the way they take a different path like Ricoh.

Maybe we'll see this lens or one like it on a GXR ? --

I can only think that the skills of these guys combined could make for some unique image tools that we will all want.
Please please don't drop the GRD though Ricoh!

Unexpected but very positive news. After the rightsizing going on at Ricoh I was a bit hesitant how committed Ricoh would remain to the camera division. But this blows away all my doubts. Now we'll have to see how they pull together the 2 portfolio's.

Ok K-mount module for GXR next please. Pentax has the most extensive set of Pancakes today.... Sweet.

And Q-mount module???

The flexibility of the GXR concept can be explioted to the max here.

WoW!
I realy like my Pentax SLR too.
GR line + Pentax Q = the strongest and widest premium compact line.
...
645D = one of the best price/quality professional system.
and all the reliable hands of Ricoh. Sounds good. :)

It was the same when Hoya bought Pentax.

Hi there,

I'm from the Pentax side and since the news this morning, I thought I'd pop over and say hi. I think the news is a good thing for everyone, and hopefully we'll see some momentum for both Ricoh and Pentax.

After reading the brief pdf describing the situation I can just begin to imagine the paperwork to make it come true. All the banks and insurance companies will have their own teams to change the wording of the documents and make sure the stacks of paper are very high. I hope the preliminary works goes smoothly and the dates are held so that the technical guys can make great toys for us to use and Ricoh/Pentax can flourish. :p

I just hope they still make the GRD lines... :)

and perhaps we will see a pentax mount module for the GXR soon...

Hi smac and wwwmorrell and welcome here! I hope you will enjoy the forum and find it a nice place where to stay and return. It's always nice to see new faces here ;)

I hope we will soon see the fruit of the Ricoh-Pentax cooperation? Both companies have great asset of technologies and knowledge. Pentax may finally get the so much requested mirrorless system and great high-end compact cameras of GRD/GX type, while Ricoh may finally get accesss to very good high ISO handling and speedy contrast detection AF recently introduced with K-R and of course, wide distribution system and support outside the Japan.

Now in the light of this merge, the Pentax Q system seems make a lot of sense to me. When I first read about it, I immediately thought it's something I would expect to see from Ricoh. It's just so "crazy" nobody would expect to see such camera from the conservative company. Ricoh always do the things their own way. The GRD and GXR are good examples and the Pentax Q system is perfect example of Ricoh-like controversial project. I can only guess the Pentax Q has been developed under the Ricoh supervision as some kind of test of Pentax engineers creativity and out-of-the-box thinking? It may not attract professionals and perfectionists, but it maybe a great creative tool for artists and free minded people. I personally would love to play with Q ;)

Indeed!
Perhaps Ricoh do not yet know themselves, what name(s) they will use on what? Althought Pentax is being bought by Ricoh, I would have thought that the Ricoh's camera division is maybe smaller than its Pentax counterpart? So when the 'photo chiefs' of both divisions sit down around the table in October, this will no doubt be one of the issues to be thrashed out...
The Pentax 'Q' line launch philosophy is in many ways better than Ricoh's (not that I'm saying the products are comparable); you see from day one with 'Q' what the minimum lens and other system components is likely to be. This suggests to me that the Pentax R&D department is much better funded than Ricoh's currently is. Could it not be that these lines might be handed to Pentax, along with the GXR, to manage? Then it might be a Pentax team who would decide the future direction and indeed fate of this camera model.
Exciting times, not just for us but also for the management teams of both companies? ;)

it always seems to gather strange feelings when news such as this is heard , being there is to be change when perhaps there was nothing wrong with the existing state and so will the new order continue as previously or the new reality to render life as we knew it extinct :?

anyway ,i still have a Pentax Auto 110 plus additions so will take them from my dusty bag and introduce to my GRD , all happy together

I looked at my local, high end camera shop's website tonight and noticed the Pentax Q already being advertised (although not sold yet).

That made me wonder. I know the technology transfer between Ricoh and Pentax will probably take a few years to be reflected in products, but how long will it take to see any distribution channel changes?

If Pentax can announce a camera last week and it shows up in my local Canadian shop this week, is it likely that next week my camera shop will be selling Ricohs??

Anyone know what will change as far as North American/Canadian distribution, if anything?
