Hi guys,

It's been a loooong time since I saw a image comparison review of the GXR against its closest competitors. I just stumbled across this article comparing the Ricoh GXR against the Sony NEX 5. It's a decent field test of the 2 cameras and you can read it here:

For the record, I think the Ricoh's output seemed more vibrant than the Sony's? But the Sony appears to have slightly better colour contrast? I played with my friend's Sony NEX 5 -- unique design but video quality and tilting screen were awesome! But Ricoh thrashed the Sony in......well I'm not going to spoil it for you guys.. :D . Lol.

Cheers!

Thanks for posting this comparison! I like Steve's lens reviews. This one should be, in my humble opinion, taken with caution. It's just a quick comparison. And as Steve mentions, the Sony 16mm turns to 24mm lens on NEX. It seems to be small difference, but it's definitely harder to produce small, fast and sharp 24mm lens for APSC than 28mm. True, Ricoh lens offer slightly faster aperture. Ricoh files are definitely more vibrant and shows better details, most probably because of generally sharper lens? Not bad considering the NEX is equipped with 14MP sensor against 12MP in A12 28mm. I look forward to Steve's full length review of the GXR A12 50/28 coming next week!

Hi Pavel,

I agree. I actually like both sets of images from both cameras. But I thought the Ricoh GXR was clearly better in the high ISO shot of the sunglasses? I thought the colour and contrast management seemed better for a shot that was unprocessed.

Cheers!

it is difficult to judge without knowing the light or actual colours of the subject, i did 'feel' the sky / dirt track/ carpark tarmac was a liitle deeper in tone of colour than might be expected in truth, that perhaps the Sony was something more natural in this respect, but then felt that the image clarity/detail is better from the Ricoh .

i have a decent computer screen :)
