How many of you would like to see GRDIV with 40mm lens?

Even before the GRDIV announcement, it was highly unlikely Ricoh would introduce a redesigned GT-1. The problem is that it's extremely hard to design small and optically perfect tele-extension lens for 28/1.9 lens. Ricoh did a great job with GT-1 in terms of sharpness, but it was compromised by strong orange flare. Even faster and bigger GRDIII/IV lens made the GT-1 useless and Ricoh was probably not willing to jump into yet another imperfect tele extension lens design, not to mention much larger and heavier design.

Now after the introduction of GRDIV, I'm curious how many of you would like to see 40mm version of GRDIV? ;) I may be wrong, but I somehow feel there is number of GRD users who really miss the GT-1 despite its strong orange flare and bulky design? I just think the GRD with 40mm lens would be the answer? I also believe the 40mm lens would allow to make it even faster than f1.9, let's say f1.4? While it may still not be anything for photographers asking for shallow DoF, it would be an excellent street candid and lowlight camera. Together with 28/1.9 it would be an excellent creative combo. And what's your opinion?
 
If the GRD IV was offered in 40mm and 28mm I would buy the 40mm version tomorrow and maybe a 28mm version IV later. I'd still have the GRD III to use as 28mm anyhow.

I have been considering a X100 for 40mm work and ever since my OM4 with 40mm the focal length has been a favorite.There is something about 40mm that approximates what my eye sees - perhaps while studying an object. Its not perfect for everything but has a wide use.

I notice that Sigma managed to get a DP2 40mm f2.8 compared to their DP1 at 28mm f4 in the same size package, suggests that a GRD IV 40mm could be just as small and bright as the 28mm version.

I am no optic engineer but if Sigma can do it Ricoh should be able to?
 
Interesting...my gut reaction is of course no- the GR is a 28mm FOV, period! ;)

But...given the choice between a 28mm f/1.9 and a 40mm f/1.4, I would be very tempted to go for the speed. Not for DOF, but for 1 stop better low light performance.

I think my personal preference might be 35mm, but that's a bit too close to the original 28mm. Or if there was only 1 mode- a 35mm f/1.4- that would be my first choice!
 
I think 40 would be great as a stand alone focal length.
For carrying a pair of cameras, 28 and 50 would be a better pairing.

If Ricoh need to make money from their established GRD customers, releasing 21 and 40/50mm GRD bodies would be a sure fire winner.
They would have to also make GV-2 sized OVFs to accompany the new bodies.
 
Well, I´m very dissapointed about the GRD IV. I won´t buy it. Period.
That´s why I´m still having the Sigma DP2s with a superb 41mm lens. And I´ll keep the GRD II for it´s 28mm.
Bad move Ricoh... It seems that this time you haven´t listened to our prays.
 
I'd buy it, but that's a no-brainer, considering I have all the others.

If a focal length with equivalent to a 40mm angle of view on a FF sensor is so important, would it make sense to try the GT-1 on the GRD II first?
 
I must add that I'd rather not see a 40mm GRD instead of 28mm. I'd like to see both offered. If I can only pick one then I think 28.
I can't see the market is limited in any way, lots of X100's have sold and so have GF1 with 20mm (40mm equiv)
 
I'd much prefer a 40mm FOV to the 28mm, but agree that both should be produced. A 40mm wouldn't be competing/interfering with the GXR - rather the GRD 40mm would complement it, I think.
 
I'd rather like to see GRD21 with completely retracting 21mm lens into body, small sensor is more suitable for wide angle in my opinion.

I'd specifically like the same look as the GR21.
 
Yes! I'd sell my GRD II with its 21mm and 40mm optics and buy a GRD IV if it had a standard 40mm lens. I'd prefer a 43mm f/2.0 standard lens.
 
Definitely like to see the return of the GT-1. It's the main reason I didn't upgrade to the GRDIII from my GRDII. I love the 28mm but sometimes the 40mm is totally necessary.
 
I think it's highly unlikely we will ever see the GT-1 back and optimized for 28/1.9 lens. It would be simply too big lens and most probably still compromised by the orange flare. This was probably the main reason why Ricoh decided to not update the GT-1 for GRDIII. It was already challenge to make a tele-lens for 28/2.4 lens. And this is why I think that additional 40mm GRDIV (not replacement of 28/1.9!) would be a perfect solution of the problem?
 
A lot of GRDIII shooter will 'feel' the 40mm combination as a 'Tele-GRD'.

This is fine due to different photographs which are possible now: street portraits with a more comfortable distance and minor wide angle effects on noses etc..
The hardcore GRD shooters will buy the two models I guess.

I´m 100% with you. If there is a chance that Ricoh releases a GRDIV with a 40mm lens, I will sell my Sigma DP2s right away! But I guess that Ricoh will call this new camera as GRDV (and maybe the last one in the GRD product line)
 
I wouldn't buy a 40mm one. I use my GRD111 for street photography and I don't like a focal length above 28mm for that. I recently purchased a Leica X1, and I simply cannot adjust to taking street shots even on a 35mm. It's being sold next week.
