GXR Roadmap

I do not know if it is already posted (if, so I am sorry), but I would like to show your a like to German Photo Website, which has an coarse roadmap for the GXR series. (It start with Fuji, you have to scroll down). Note, that the APS-Size module for 2011 (Might be the zoom) is not an GR-Lens.

Thanks for posting it olli! I was about to post it later today ;)

I'm not surprised about the non-GR lens in case of APSC zoom module. GR lenses are primes with exceptional optical parameters and image quality. It would be pretty hard to maintain the GR quality in case of zoom lens. And it would be especially hard in case of 24-90mm lens, which appears to be the focal length of this new zoom module.

On the other hand, I don't expect the quality of GX zoom lens for APSC would be bad or lousy. The GX lenses are still exceptional performers. In terms of corner sharpness, chromatic aberration and barrel distortion S10 lens would beat any of today's cameras with similar lens (LX3/5, EX1, S90). So I have high expectations for this new APSC zoom lens.

The only possible problem I see in the initial aperture values at wide/tele end. I guess the apertures will start (at best) at f3.5/5.6. At least if the size of the 24-90 lens should be kept small. No way we would see f2.5 or even f2.8. But I would be more than happy to be proven wrong ;)

If the start apertures will be at f3.5/5.6, I think they need to implement image stabilisation. However this would also affect its size.
The Ricoh guy at Photokina which told me something about the new modules which are show in the map, underlines that they are working hard to keep the zoom small. I think it will take a while until the release. So far this map confirms his predictions, apart from the 30mm APS Module, which is not shown.

30mm APS module? Didn't he talk about the existing 50(33)mm lens? What I miss is in this chart is a fast non-macro 40mm pancake. Maybe next year? ;) In any case, APSC lens mount module (regardless of mount type) is a very good news. This could give GXR a new boost. I only hope that the lens mount will support also AF lenses. Not because I own them or I'm interested in them. But I think many prospective buyers expect to use AF lenses and not just old MF lenses.

from what i can deduce from the roadmap in 2011 we will se a 24-90 apsc zoom..... and a probable m mount "expansion" unit

hooray!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Well, if they indeed come out with this module, and if the sensor is of good quality, I'm most likely to go for it ... Does anybody know what make APS-C sensor Ricoh uses in their APS-C-sized modules? Are these from Sony? Any guess if they will use the same sensor as in the present APS-C modules, or a different, new one?

Martin

Hi Martin,

Yep, the APSC is Sony made (as well as the rest of sensors in Ricoh cameras). I personally hope the APSC zoom module will get slightly newer version of the APSC currently used in 50 and 28mm module. The base ISO of existing sensor is in range 200-3200. But judging from some recent camera announcements, Sony already produced 12MP sensors with base sensitivity in range 200-6400 and 200-12800. I often use ISO3200 with A12 and ISO6400/12800 would be definitely welcome! ;)

One further question for me would be, if they are able, even it is APS-C, to build a compact module. When I dediced for the GXR the main reason was to get compact camera you can always take with you. There are several option on market to for APS-C even FT/mFT to get a good camera with compact body. BUT the size of lens looks always to be the issue on a bigger sensor to get something compact.

I'm afraid, there is no chance to ever seen a compact module with APSC and zoom lens. Next year is planned 24-90mm APSC zoom and I don't expect it any smaller than A12 50mm. The only chance lies in the non-macro, non-zoom pancakes with non-stellar corner sharpness or huge amount of SW correction applied over the photos (as Panasonic does with their lenses).

The only thing on the GXR roadmap that I want to see out is the MFT module.

I personally don't have any desire for new GXR zoom lenses. I adore primes, especially Ricoh's. Actually, I have rather a lot of prime lenses, some legendary old glass like the Minolta MC ROKKOR-PG 58mm f/1.2, some modern, like the Voigtländer Nokton, some warm and characterful like the Canon 50mm f/1.4 M39, some digital like the Lumix 20mm f/1.7 M4/3. A M4/3 module would let me shoot them all.

If Ricoh has the genius to make full frame module that will allow deeply rear projecting lenses like the Voigtländer 12mm or collapsing Leicas, they will make an absolute mint.

If not, the a m4/3 module will do nicely. It will make all those orphan second hand GXR bodies suddenly very useful and very valuable.

In the meantime, maybe I'll just go find a cheap 50mm f/2.5 kit.

28mm 11x megazoom on a 1/1.7" sensor? Pah! We don't need to compete with cheap consumer compacts; they'll beat us on price anyway.
