GXR P10 + extension lenses test (GT1, TC1, TCON14)

This test is only a quick and dirty addition to excellent Gerd's experiment with P10 and some Ricoh converter lenses available here:
http://www.waloszek.de/gxr_conv_e.php

By default, P10 is incapable of using converter lenses. Although both P10 and S10 share nearly identical lens cap mount, small protrusions on the P10 mount prevents the HA3 tube to be mounted on the P10 module. I was in an adventurous mood today and I decided to try adapt the HA3 for P10 mount. All it required was smooth file, some patience and a bit of luck ;) Now I can attach the HA3 on the P10 and it still works fine also with S10. However, this alone is only a first step!

The major reason why Ricoh probably prevented the HA3 to be mounted on the P10 is the fact, that if the lens is fully extended to 300 mm, it's slightly longer than the HA3 and therefore, it's impossible to attach anything on the HA3. Of course, you can mount anything on the HA3 before extending the lens. But if you extend the lens to max, it will hit the rear part of attached lens or filter and this may lead to damage of the P10 lens mechanism. So what it needs is a bit of extension. I think a simple 43-43mm spacer (or two) spacer would do the job?

Sadly, I currently don't have any spacer to try with Ricoh lenses. On a positive note, I have a 43-46 ring that was delivered with Olympus TCON14. And it works very well as the required length extension for HA3! So I was able to mount TCON14 in front of fully extended P10 lens maximizing its focal length to 435mm! And to my great surprise, it works very well!

As you can see, both GT1 and TC1 are completely worthless, except for creating "lensbaby-like" effect I described >here<.

TCON14, on the other hand, seems to be very usable. Of course, there is some corner softness and pronounced chromatic aberration. But nothing dramatic as in case of GT1/TC1. Generally, it works very well.

There are, of course, also some drawbacks. First is the size of entire combo, second is the problematic usability in anything but good light. 435mm is simply too long for handheld shots and f5.6 at 300mm does not help either.

Tomorrow, I will try to take and post some more examples and a detail of adapted HA3.

UPDATE:
Here is how the TCON14 look attached on P10:

And here is the gigantic TCON14b:

TCON14b delivers somewhat better image quality than TCON14. But because of its size and weight, its practically useless.

Here is a comparison of P10 (on left) and S10 extension mount. The little protrusion on the P10 prevents the HA3 to be mounted on.

If you are an adventurous type, you can try to adapt the HA3 with smooth file. Below you can see the places you need to take care of. All you need to do is to lower the profile of all these places. Do it in a little steps and always try the HA3 on P10 before next round of filling.
BTW, I'm not responsible on any damage you may do to HA3 or P10! ;)

love your adventurous spirit with extension lenses. Today I went the other way and mounted my Oly on my new 28mm lens to see how it would work. It is night time, so thought I would shoot high Iso at the kitchen and dog for fun.

Excellent work, Pavel! And Gerd too!

So the question is a quick ebay search shows there are Olympus TCON-14B or TCON-14D etc versions, so which is the one we need?
EDIT - never mind, I see in your other thread yours is the 14 with the 46mm thread. The 14B is the big one with 62mm.

So this is the same TCON-14 as Pavel used? It makes the 28mm into a 40mm (x1.45)?

Thanks, I thought that looked wider so I was getting confused. It's a good to know there's viable option to get a wide angle on a GXR APS-C module instead of just on the S10 with the DW-6 at 19mm. Ricoh makes the GW-2 for the GRD III to 21mm so there must be some demand for it amngst 28mm users. And many people (I think Pavel himself too) have expressed a desire for a 35-40mm APS-C module so this would make them happy.

T43-46 ring that was delivered with Olympus TCON14.

After a bit of googling, just confirming the 43-46mm adapter is the CLA-8, which doesn't appear to be listed as a current product on Olympus' site, but does look to still be available at online retailers.

Brad, how have you attached the WCON-07 to the A12? It says on Olympus's site that it needs a 55m adapter but I can't tell from their sparse info which one is a 40.5-55mm adapter. The CLA-4 I can see from the image is a 45.6-55mm.

Good idea Burd! I'm planning to try the extension lenses I own with A12 28mm too. But I doubt any of the tele lenses will actually work. 28mm is just too wide and it's extremely hard to design an extension lens for that focal length. GT-1 for GRDII was full of compromises and it worked only on GRDII. When attached on GRDIII (via a step-down ring) it produces heavy corner softness not suitable for anything useful. And I expect the same result with A12 28mm. And TCON14 is not enough wide and flat and produces visible dark circle cover large part of image. As if you attach TC1 on GX200/S10 without fully zooming the lens. So this lens is clearly not optimized to be attached on 28mm lens.

Anyway, your test proved that at least the wide extensions lenses could be useful with A12 28mm? How are the corners with attached wcon-07? They look OK on these small samples.

Anthony, the TCON I used in this test was TCON14, the smaller lighter TCON (body made of plastic). TCON14B delivers superior image, but it's too big and heavy to be really useful with GXR. I may give it a try with P10, just to confirm or deny its superiority against the TCON14. But I cannot imagine a reason why I would like to carry or use this mastodon. It's bulkier and heavier than entire GXR+P10 combo :D

TCON-14 is often sold at ebay and some time ago there was a big sale on warehouseexress.com for just 9.99GBP! But it seems it's gone now ;) BTW the TCON-14D you mentioned is for Oly 8080 and I don't have any clue if it would work (how good or bad) with GXR!

Anthony: the stepdown ring is from 55mm to 40.5 and seems to work just fine. The WCON .7 is pretty heavy so I definitely hold the lens while focusing.

Pavel: As I received the lens last night (Colorado time) I really have not had a chance to take it outside. we are supposed to have snow today, so may or may not get my chance to experiment.

In any case, the 28mm is a little gem of a lens, and i can see that as staying on the camera for much of the time! Pavel, again, thanks for experimenting with the longer lens idea, hope they see that we are trying to be creative with the options they have given us!
Best to you both
Brad

/attachment]I shoot a lot of 1:1 so the 20mm setting may work for that. I see some fall off in the corners, and it is definitely light sensitive, but fun as well.

Hi Pavel, thank you for your useful experiment and for referring to my pages with converter experiments.

I would like to add one thing:

Peter Watson, UK, sent an e-mail in response to my page and told me of his converter experiments with P10, HA-3, and TCON 14. I asked him whether I can publish his results on my page but regrettably got not answer.

So, I would like to mention a few details. He somehow managed to squeeze the HA-3 on the P10 and also added a step up ring 43-46mm to extend the HA-3. The TCON 14 has 1.45 magnification and thus offers a focal length of 435mm as Pavel already stated. Peter bought all this from ebay for little money.

He also sent two photos, one of the moon and one of a water airplane in the air -- see the latter below.

So, here is the credit that Peter deserves!

Best regards, Gerd

You are welcome Gerd! You started it, we only continue ;) There are many things that could be done P10 and extension lenses. The weather was not very good today and I was not able to take anything useful to show you the usability of P10+TCON converter, maybe except this pic (taken with TCON14b)...

It's 100% crop, so not useful for printing or anything else serious. In addition, it was taken handheld and through the dirty window. Not a very good combination. Tomorrow, I will try it one more time with open window and tripod ;) I wish my LR3 trial is not expired. It's converted with SP Pro, but from what I saw, LR3 should be able to extract even more details out of the P10 DNG. Maybe next time?

Thanks for the info, Brad. When you say heavy, is it as big and heavy as Pavel's TCON-14B which pretty much makes it impractical for normal usage? Here is his pic of it from his other thread:

file.php

Here is another "moon" try. This time I tried TCON14, TCON14b and P10 at 300mm and no tele extension...

And here are couple of TCON14 photos I took and processed today. The day started with heavy fog but then we got excellent Autumn day full of sun and surprisingly warm weather for this date...

If you are interested, TCON14 is usable from 85mm of the native P10 focal length. Lower focal lengths suffer from vignetting. Here is the list of native focal lengths and extended lengths with TCON14
Code:
P10	TCON14
85 123
105	152
135	196
200	290
300	435
The advantage of using TCON14 with smaller distances than just 300mm is the ability to use longer longer focal lengths than native with smaller aperture numbers (not in all cases!). Let's say you want to use 300mm. The lowest aperture number for 300mm is f5.6. But if you use 200mm + TCON14, the focal length is nearly 300mm (290mm) and you may benefit from f4.5!

Hello Pavel,
Sorry I have taken so long in replying about the modified HA-3 for using a wide angle lens.
The photographs I am posting are with the standard P-10 at 28mm and with my Jackar 0.60 46mm fitted on my modified HA-3. Well I am not the best of photographers but I hope that they will show you what can be done.
Any questions then please ask and I will try to answer them as best I can.
Peter.

Hi, I apologize in advance for my English,
I want to ask is there a big teleconverter of 1,45 x as 6x or 7x that take place in the Ricoh GXR P10. I also use TCON14 and am very pleased. Thanks in advance.

Hello Andreev_VS
From the experimenting that I did with telephoto lenses I would say that it would be hit and miss with 2 and 3 x lenses and if you bought them and they did not work then it would cost you a lot of money. The TCON14 takes you up to 435mm and that is not perfect but the results are quite good for little money. You would need a tripod for that length of lens and I personally would not bother trying it.
Peter.

Hi andreev_vs and welcome on the board! I'm afraid, Peter is right. 2x or even 3x extension lenses usually don't work very well if not used with the lens/camera they were designed for. And they are expensive. And if you find some cheep lenses, they are most probably rubbish not worth the asking price. I think the TCON14 is the best you can get for your money.
