GXR in the pub

Last Friday, I went to the pub with colleagues from work and of course, I took the GXR with both modules to try how good or bad it will work in typical pub low-light environment. Of course, the S10 images are noisier and not as sharp as A12 photos taken at higher ISO. But I found the S10 output pretty usable up to ISO1600. And as shown below, in some cases is the higher DoF produced by smaller S10 a real advantage over the shallow DoF produced by A12 sensor. Huge DoF is especially useful if shooting groups of people at similar but not exactly the same distance. While few centimeters here or there does not really matter in case of small S10 sensor, it does matter in case of A12. All in all, I think both modules performed very well considering the low amount of light and no flash fired.

Hmm... does your wife know you're now snapping pictures of girls? Better limit yourself to pictures of Lucia! :D

How hard is it to focus the A12 in low light and take candid shots? Or was this auto focus?

Is it just me, or does high DOF look more natural, like looking at the scene through a window? :geek:

The mark of a "true photographer", indeed ... :p

Thanks for comments guys!

No problem with taking pics of girls. I can watch but of course, I can't touch :D In any case, these are just test shots ;)

Hi Pavel, did you shoot these with infamous AF, did you and gxr suffer much after firmware? Just asking :D My beloved pentax K20D would kill me in a pub.

These pics were taken with older (initial) FW and if I my memory serves well, mostly in AF mode, maybe with a light touch of manual focus. However, as I just pointed > here < new A12 FW is not very helpful in case of low light conditions like these. I mean, it's not very helpful in terms of speed of AF in low light.

AF with new FW seems to be much more reliable and much less prone to hunt for focus. But once the shutter speed drops under 1/17 (at ISO200 and f2.5), the A12 AF is switched to visibly slower AF mode.

a great set of images, you can really see the quality of the gxr. does the quality seem better with the s10, better than a grII or gx 100 I mean?

I saw the gxr in some shops in london, but I too just looked and did not touch :)

Thanks for comments Nick. S10 image quality seems to be slightly better than GX100, but the the main S10 advantage I see in the speed of RAW writing, the ability to use continuous mode in RAW and large number of image settings. The downside of S10 is price and size. GXR+S10 is about the size of G11. And this is somewhat too big for all-around camera. I mean, it's not a problem to have S10 always with you. But it's nowhere as comfortable as GRD (in terms of size and weight).

Love the colours in the non b&w pixs.

Would like to get my hands on the GXR with a nice 50mm lense...too much money for me at the moment
