GRIIIx: Unable to store image/shutdown

I (experienced photographer, 64) own a Ricoh GRIIIx for about two months now. Shoot raw + jpg. Every now and then the camera will show an error message: “unable to store image.” It will then shut down (screen goes black, lens retracts). In this case only jpgs will show when transfing files to my PC. I’ve reformatted the memory cards (SanDisc) in camera, used another memory card (also reformatted in camera), the issues persists even after correct firmware update 1.20. The problem seems to be experienced by several others owners of GRIIIx and GRIII. Do you have any idea what to do? Your help is much appreciated.

If you use the internal memory does it produce correct jpeg & raw files? If it does then it may indicate some (weird!) incompatibility of the SD cards.

Thanks sphexx for your reply. Internal memory ok. I've tried several Sandisc cards that work fine in my Fujis and my Leica Q. One is a Extreme Pro 200 MB/sec V30I 3 with 128 GB bought new for the Ricoh and only used with it. The other one is an identical Sandisc Card with 64 GB. Both formatted in the Ricoh. Had the issue before the Firmware update and after it. Now I try a SDHC Sandisc, see what happens. In all my years as a journalist/photographer I've never had any issues with Sandisc cards. I can't reproduce the problem. There are other users with the same problem (GRIII and GRIIIX) online. They are guessing like me. For Ricoh the problem does officially not exist. I've asked the Ricoh service, no reply so far...

If you contact Adrian at Ricoh uk he will help if he can. DM him on Instagram address: @ricoh_gr_photography then just say Dear Adrian etc……I’m sure he will help if he can.

Thank you kennikins for your advice. I'm not active on Instagram. Is there another way to contact Adrian? I'll also try to contact the German Ricoh service in Hamburg tomorrow and see what they have to say.

Ah so
You are in Germany? I only have Instagram contact for him sorry.

Ok, sorry, I should have introduced myself as a newbie to the forum. I'm living in Tuebingen, that's in the south of Germany, about 40 kilometers from Stuttgart.

When I bought the GRiii back in 2019 I had the same problem from time to time. I also used Sandisk (as I always did with al my camera’s). Tried everything and the problem ended when I switched to Lexar. Haven’t had a problem since. Of course I can’t be sure this works for everybody, but my GRiii still works fine and on the newer GriiiX it has never ever happened. Maybe you have a non-Sandisk card, or can lend a card from somebody to try for a few weeks?

Dear KeeC, thanks for your replay. That's what I'll try next. I've ordered a Transcend Card, see what happens. Ricoh Service seems to ignore the problem completely although almost every firmware update for GRIII and GRIIIx up to now promised to improve sd card functionality. And you don't promise this without a reason. If they have actually done something is a different story. Talk is cheap...

I hope this solves your problem, I know exactly how it feels when you can’t trust a camera because of sudden write errors and shutdowns and have to guess what’s causing it and desperately try all kind of solutions (thats at least what I did for a few months back in 2019).

Thank you KeesC for your kind words. That's exactly how it feels. In my job as a journalist and photographer I've used quite a lot of cameras (Leica, Nikon, Fuji) film and digital in 35 years. You have to be able to trust your equipment - and your customer service.

A short update: I've tried two new SD Cards: a Samsung 32 Pro Plus SDHC 3 V30. Works perfectly so far with the GIIIx. No problem so far also with Transcend 128 GB, SDXC, V30. Seems the problems occured a- at least with my camera - only with several SanDisc SDXC Cards. I have no idea why. Let's see what happens with the new firmware version 1.21. ;>)

Sounds good!

The only thing I know is that Sandisk isn’t the original Sandisk anymore. Bought by another company many many years ago. So maybe they use different / lower quality components. Who knows…

Final update so far: all fine WITHOUT SanDisc. What still surprises me is that all my other cameras (several Fujis, Leica Q, Nikon D750) work perfectly well with SanDisc Cards - old ones and new ones ;>)

It’s possible some other cameras have the same ’quirk’ but you don’t learn about them unless you frequent that particular camera’s forum.

I remember back in Ricoh GRD days when “dust” was much complained about that if you Googled dust on sensors far and away the commonest complaints were for Nikons — pbviously they sold more cameras for a start!
