GRDIII previews, reviews and full size samples

Re: GRDIII previews and reviews

Stanley Young posted one full resolution ISO800 sample on his Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/euyoung/37 ... 6/sizes/o/

Although the image is in B&W, somewhat unsharp and some parts have blown highlights, you can get a very good impression how the GRDIII high ISO is. And I think there is visible improvement over the GRDII ISO800. Sure, the parts in shadows are noisy and there are visible heavy noise reduction processing (Stanley told me he uses NR OFF). But generally it looks good? I mean, it will look good if correctly processed from RAW ;) It seems to me that this GRDIII ISO800 is like ISO400 from GRDII.

There are also two new high ISO samples at Ricoh GR Blog. Unfortunately, only small previews:

But there is no doubt the GRDIII ISO800 looks much better than GRDII ISO800. I can't wait to try this new Ricoh baby ;)

Any idea when you are getting a sample? I am still waiting to see some full res jpg and maybe even a RAW would be nice!

Re: GRDIII previews and reviews

Sorry Tim, I don't have any clue. But I'm sure Cris (VladimirV) will post some samples soon ;)

Re: GRDIII previews and reviews

Japanese DC.Watch.Impress posted a large number of detailed GRDIII exterior shots, accessories, menu system and side by side comparison shots of GRDIII, GRDII, DP1 and G10.

http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/revi ... 06842.html

GRDIII is visibly thicker and tiny bit higher than GRDII, but still way smaller compared to G10 ;)

Many people asks for GRD with large sensor and fast wide lens. But GRDIII is a perfect example how small (almost unnoticeable) change of sensor size and lens brightness impacts on the camera/lens size. This is also why DP1 lens starts at F4. The body is already larger/thicker than GRDIII and it's still not enough for integrating reasonably fast lens. It's all about size.

Re: GRDIII previews and reviews

Thanks for the posting. That's a good comparison. Especially showing how the new, faster lens needs a bigger camera overall.

Also like the looks of the "never ready" case for the GRDIII. Would make my GRDI not fit in a pocket anymore.

Are the current samples from eyoung and others from a pre-porduction firmware perhaps? I can't see why they haven't posted full size samples.
Ricoh's website samples while hint at whats possible don't tell it all.

On an initial look I think Ricoh have improved the Macro sharpness dramatically with the new moving element. The cats claw is very sharp both the image and the claw!

Seriously though, early samples look like this lens is very good!

less noise similar detail

Thanks for those links Pavel. Definitely smoother and less noisy jpegs than my old GRDI, although some may prefer the 'grain' of the older model. I don't think there is any particularly noticeable increase in sharpness or clarity with the jpegs though (other than as a by product of less noise) but they were pretty good anyway. Looks better than jpegs I've seen from the GRDII. Even with the ludicrously high price I suspect I may end up buying one. Would be very interested in getting hold of a RAW file first though.

Yes, these JPEGs look definitely better than those from GRDII (as of noise performance). But still, the noise reduction seems to be too strong for my taste and I guess also for taste of many GRDI followers? But it's pretty evident the noise performance is significantly improved. So I guess the noise level in RAW will be a very nice surprise. With GRDII, my main ISO sensitivity for indoor shots was ISO400. But I see a lot of use for GRDIII at ISO800 ;) Can't wait to see the RAW files.

Thank Pavel, indeed a great find!
I think we may start seeing RAWs pretty soon...But I would like to hear your first impressions as the expert!

Blokes (and ladies), maybe I can add some to the comprehensive links put up by Pavel. ;)

Some note:
1) the photos are at reduced size
2) but most are taken for the same scene at different exposure combo
3) comparative shots of GRDIII vs GRDII/ E-P1/ F200EXR/ CX1/ GX200/ G10 are arranged at the bottom of the post
4) don't ask for the full sized originals cos I didn't take the photos
;)

Thanks for that Nevin.

Looking at these shots, the GRDIII certainly seems to bring noticable noise improvements to the table.

The noise that was crearly visible (at least to my uneducated eye) on both GRDII and GX200 was the main reason I held off from buying either. I appreciate that this could (to an extent) be dealt with in the processing stage, but sometimes I just want the image straight out of the camera.
I am much happier with what I am seeing from the GRDIII sample images. Does anyone have a more 'expert' opinion to back up my thoughts here?

By the way, as we know, the E-P1 gives incredibly noise free images accross the range, but don't you think that the images it produces are a little too 'warm'?
