GR Arrived Today!!!

Finally took the plunge and my GR arrived today. What a lovely thing it is. Just like my beloved GR1s and GRD but on extra-strength steroids. Firmware updated, a quick read through the manual and first run through setting her up and I'm ready to go. Shame it's now 11.20pm and there's nothing to shoot. Even the cats have gone to bed.

One thing I'm not happy with is the leather case. I'm glad I didn't pay for it. It's a very tight fit. I guess it would loosen with time but the poppers that hold the top are so loose the thing just falls off all the time. And the magnet in the flap is too feeble. Hopeless. Have I got a dud or are they all like that? *** Edit: Superglued the flap on. Seems to work. ***

Compensating good news is that when I sold my GX8 a long time ago, I kept the leather case and lo and behold it fits the GR perfectly. It was too big for the GRD but bang on for the GR.

I took advantage of the cheap GV-1 deal but haven't tried it yet. GH-3 Hood is on the way, as is a GT-1 to to play with. Happy days.

Can I ask where you got your camera from? I haven't been able to find any camera plus viewfinder deals online. Thanks.

Commercial Cameras in Church Stretton, Shropshire. My local Ricoh/Pentax dealer. First rate company - very helpful. I called them and the RMSD package arrived next day. Website is http://www.commercialcameras.co.uk and tel. number is 01694 722 202.

I must say, the more I work through the menus and setting, the more impressed I am with the GR. Why doesn't every camera have a TAV mode? The C-AF switch/button combo is so handy - I hardly every shoot continuous but it is good to have it readily available when I need it. And, it's probably heresy but I like the 28/35/47 crop options - I set them to Fn2 and use them more than I expected. Still lots to wrap my head around but all good so far.

Still waiting for the GT-1 to arrive, I think I may have caught an Ebay cold.

I'm just enjoying the fact that, for the first time ever, the camera I want is the cheapest in its category. When does that ever happen?

Do you want mine? It 'brand new, never used ;)

The GR case is "interesting", it has good and bad points.

I have the original GRD case which stretched (quite a lot) and easily accommodates the GRDIII/IV as well. In fact the GRD now rattles around in its case. I think it is faux-leather but it is serviceable enough and has lasted the years. It covers the camera body fairly well and the belt loop has held together for all this time. Well made like any Ricoh part.

The oem case for the GR seems to be genuine thick leather. It seems made for the quick access beloved of "Street Shooters" that seem to be the iconic target market for the camera. I don't classify myself as a Street Shooter and I suspect that most owners of the GR will use it as a regular camera even though they might do some street shooting from time to time. Hence possibly the complaints about the GR oem case?

If in fact the camera is to be used for street shooting then the case must be ideal. Thick protective leather, soft touch magnetic flap which can optionally be completely removed for the "quick draw". If the flap is "off" then you would want the case to hold the camera with a reasonable grip.

I quite like mine because it is pretty solid and has proteceted the camera from a couple of soft drops without any harm. But the idea of wearing it on a belt with those cut-away sides is not so good. Any camera in a belt case is bound to get occasionally bumped into things and parts of the camera are left exposed to knocks, but fine if you are slimmer and the perpetually careful type.

Noteworthy on the GRD case it is the "GR Digital" badge that seems to get the scrapes - those having a scuffed badge on their case should wear it with pride.

The GR case was very tight when I first bought it but has improved with wear and now holds the camera comfortably. I recommend some perseverence.

I have had no trouble with the retention of the click-on click-off buttons holding the flap in place, but then I have only removed the flap once to check on how the "holster" worked.

On balance the GR case is better built and made than the earlier GRD version which has proved extremely long lasting. It is less overall protective against knocks, but where there is covering its protective capacity must be high. The light magnet and pop stud flap are obviously designed for the quick access needed when you see a photograph coming on and for this purpose it must be an excellent design. For those that just want to carry their camera with padded fully enclosed protection might find it somewhat vulnerable and they might want a more enveloping padded carry-about case.

Of course you could always stick the camera in a pocket, but to my taste this is somewhat risky, but it is an option, just make sure that it has minimal lint and the camera doesn't share the pocket with mobile phone, keys or coins and other such stuff.
