In Summer of 2006 when I bought and began to use my first digital camera (Panasonic DMC-LZ5, 6 Mpixel), I had no idea what "not to try" (such as trying to auto-focus on/in moving water).
Ironically, compared to the small percentage of shots that happened to generate interesting results early-on, my yield (after acquiring more knowledge and better hardware) nearly 4 years later is hardly better - and there are surely opportunities that I now miss (because I now know that they are things that are unlikely to succeed).
