I love the series concept that you have adopted, and this one is particularly atmospheric. They really are great portraits.
The Helios 58mm images seem particularily fine...is this a heavy lens Marcus? I have my Minolta 50mm/1.4 which probably fills a similar gap in focal lengths as the Helios, so should give this a try again. It cost me 'nothing' as I have had it more years than I can remember! It is quite heavy though at around 300 grams including adaptor.
All the best,
Andy
Thank you reddevil, Genster, Jonie and Andy. Kind of you to comment.....
Andy, the Helios + adapter is 320grams, so a little heavier and probably longer also (75mm with adapter). It's M42 mount and is twice as long as the Olympus f1.8 and 1/3 longer than the Canon FD f1.8 I have also. Quite big for a 50mm lens but very nice to use. The front mounted aperture ring has single stops from f2 to f16, then another ring behind this one which gives you free variation between f2 and whatever else you set it to. Awesome idea I've not seen on any other lens........and wonderful once you get used to it.
Hi Marcus,
the design offers a lot of protection to the lens' front element, which is something I miss on all my Minolta's which were designed for lens hoods.
I will need to get hoods (probably third party hoods) for mine before long, or at least the ones I have decided to keep!
All the best,
Andy
Speaking of hoods.....as Michael (zagato) mentioned on another post, the Helios must be used with one. I also use a yellow filter so in the end the whole lens + adapter + hood setup is 110mm...
BTW the color images from your posts with the Minolta 85mm are very cool!
