Generic Battery for GXR

Anyone have any experience using non-Ricoh batteries for the GXR? Some Hong Kong sellers have them at rock bottom prices & include a charger. The one I'm looking at is 3.6v 2100mAh. It's also supposed to replace the NP-95 Fuji battery.

Good question! I'm too after a 3rd party battery for GXR, but I don't have any clue about reliable manufactures/sellers of these non-oem batteries? With GRD, I'm using Energizer battery, which is OK in terms of number of shots. The only downside of this battery is its quick death. I mean quick death at the end of power cycle. While with the original battery I'm able to take several shots in "orange" battery mode, Energizer dies nearly instantly the camera shows the "orange" warning.

I have been using a 3rd party battery for my GXR since the day I have got it and so far no problem. I don't notice much difference between the Ricoh one and the 3rd party one.

I bought mine in Hong Kong as well, and at that time, there is not much to choose from (only Ricoh and Fuji use that battery it seems). It cost me over HKD$100 without charger. (it was a 3.7v 1800mAh one)

Thanks for the responses, guys! Yesterday I went back thru the forum posts to see if there were any about non-Ricoh batt's. I did find a thread in which a couple of members said that the main problems they ran into were: 1) somewhat shorter usable times before exhaustion (often not indicating such), and 2) that the generics would simply die and leave the lens extended (this was not a GXR, but I'm assuming it can occur with any model) without warning. I'm guessing that the genuine batteries have chips in them which communicate with the camera and trigger a "power down" mode, while the generics don't. And, as everyone knows, "you get what you pay for". So, I've decided to bite the bullet and eventually order another genuine battery (this will be #3) to have as backup. It will cost $42 USD but I shouldn't have any unexpected problems. I'm taking only my GXR system with me to France next June and I'm just trying to plan ahead. Perhaps I can find a small 240v lamp timer in Paris that I can use with my charger so I won't have to worry about overcharging. Ken

I've picked up a set of Up Start batteries replacements for the Fuji NP 95 for a couple of bucks at e-bay. The original ricoh replacements are just too expensive and I'd run out of my single battery already a couple of times.

So far I've not ran into any issues with the off brand el-cheapo batteries. Maybe they run a little shorter bit they are only emergency spares to me so not a big deal. Also Ricoh's own batteries don't have much in between a full sign in the display and empty (a common issue with Ricoh cameras in my experience).

Is there any chance to damage the camera or the battery by using a third party charger/battery ?

I'm actally looking for a car charger ; I think ricoh doesn't make any , I am I right ?

has anyone tried this ?

I have these on order. 15 days or so I can start to try them out!

Already arrived taking only 7 days. Charge quickly enough. Have so far used for 2 days, so cannot say how the charge lasts before needing to be changed over to a fresh battery.

On a similar topic...
As my GXR is off to Alpha UK for a screen replacement under warranty, I decided to give the 'often dreamed of' GRDIII a try.
As I like to have a spare battery I thought I would try one of these;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/PowerPlanet-Com ... 581&sr=8-9
Although sold as a GRDIII battery, I notice on delivery that the voltage and amp rating is not the same as the Ricoh product;
Ricoh DB-65 is rated as 3.6V 1250mAh 4.5Wh
The Amazon product is rated as 3.7V 1150mAh.
Would anyone like to guess if I will damage the camera using this battery? It certainly fits for size, but that is not really enough! ;)
Thanks!
Andy

I have had similar batteries in the past with a Digilux 1 and had ni problems. From a technical point of view I have no idea whether this could damage the camera but I am certainly interested to find out! My batteries are also 3.7V by Wasabi Power but rated at 2200mAh and said to replace NP-95. The original battery I still have is a NP-90.

Wasabi batteries working just fine.
Thanks.

Did you try to charge the Ricoh batteries with the wasabi charger ?
I need a charger that can be used in a car.

I also needed a car charger, but I would never charge any other batteries in different charger. So I have not tried that.

I paid no more than $10 for 3 more batteries, and I can't tell you which is which (other than the label). they are all on par for performance, and worst case- I have 4!
