Firmware update for GRDIII? and...

becauseitsnice

New Member
This question was probably asked many times before, but I can't find it anywhere, so it goes. How do you know you have the latest firmware on the GRDIII? I just bought mine from Adorama a week ago and wants to know if i have the latest firmware.

Oh and also: Exposure Compensation on the GRDIII. When I pop it to Shutter priority, Aperature priority, and Program, I'm allowed to "exposure compensate" on the zoom button, but not on Manual. Why is that? Is there something wrong, or I'm just not up to date with its firmware?

If you follow these button presses you can get the firmware displayed that is in your camera -- http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/download/firm ... wup_en.pdf

Here is the excerpt from the manual link as above, look for the number next to MAIN, this example shows V1.00
Note the SH is shutter count and ST is shutter count with flash.

1. Make sure that the camera’s power is turned off.
2. While pressing the N (Macro) button (1), hold down the 6 (Playback) button (2) for 2- 3 seconds.
• The firmware version will be displayed on the picture display for about 20 seconds.
3. Check the firmware version displayed on the picture display.
• e.g. When the current version of the firmware is V1.00,

the version will be shown as [MAIN : V 1.00] as follows:
MAIN : V 1.00
BKUP: V X.XX
MONI : V X.XX
ADJD : V X.XX
EXTD : V X.XX
CPU1 : V X.XX
SH : XXXXXX
ST : XXXXXX

The current lastest for the GRD III firmware is V2.10, the update file for Mac and Windows and instructions on how to update is here -- http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/download/firmware/grd3/

Exposure compensation does not work in manual mode, because it's "useless" in this mode. Did you notice what exposure compensation actually do? In A mode, it shifts the shutter speed, in S mode it shifts the aperture, In Camera and P mode it shifts the shutter speed and/or aperture, depending of the actual lightning conditions. M mode (unlike the other automatic or semi-automatic modes), is pure manual mode, where you can control both shutter speed and aperture. In addition, there does not work the Auto ISO. The exposure compensation is useless here, because you can actually do it yourself (by increasing/decreasing the shutter speed and or aperture).

However, the zoom button still offers certain "automatic" function. If you press the zoom button in M mode, the camera sets the shutter speed/aperture near to the deal values for actual lightning conditions. In the camera menu, you can find function "One press M mode" where you can set in what way should the zoom button in M mode work:
Aperture Priority - it preserves the aperture number and changes the shutter speed (like A mode)
Shutter Priority - it preserves the shutter speed and changes the aperture number (like S mode)
Program - it changes both shutter speed and aperture (like P mode)

Hope this helps? ;)

This is a very great camera :!:

Everyday I discover some new function.

Love my Ricoh GRD III

Wow, odklizec. I just learn a lot from what you just said. Thank you so much. You have been very helpful. In the near future i would love to offer some pointer for new-bies like myself. thanks.

You are welcome becauseitsnice ;) I'm sure you will be able to help newbies when you master your camera. Ricoh cameras have a lot of useful photographic features but most of them are easy to learn. You just have to find what suits you best. Of course, you don't have to use ALL features ;)

exposure setting and preview

Pavel, I would have never discovered the M mode zoom button tip, unless mentioned here? Or is it somewhere in the user manual?
I wonder if there is a setting to address this problem: in M mode, the live-preview on the LCD reflects the exposure deviations for only two stops, and beyond these values the screen does not get any brighter or darker during the preview. I wonder if there is a work around this...
thanks,
roni

Yes roni, the M mode zoom trick is mentioned in the user manual ;) As for your M mode problem, if I change the shutter speed, I can clearly see the change of brightness? Yes, it stops changing at some point (if the exposure meter hits on the border value +/-2EV), but it's only because the LCD would be too light or too dark to see anything on it.

pavel, too lazy to read the manuals! shame b/c i am sure i am missing a lot. I also never use the "my X" settings...
I still prefer the P mode combined with EV compensation assigned to the fn1 button, and spot metering...and with the adj wheel assigned to iso, i feel like I am pretty much all set.
thanks again!
