FEBRUARY 2011 - THE OLD AND THE NEW

Thank you all who participated in the January contest (you can vote here). Let's start with the February contest!

Theme:
The contest theme for this month is "THE OLD AND THE NEW" (theme suggested by joelypolly - winner of the December contest)! We had very similar theme back in 2009 (the past and the present). Although I usually ask winners to suggest something new, I thought it would be nice to give this theme another try?

The objective of this theme is to post TWO photos. Feel free to post anything that fits the theme. It's preferred (but not required) if both photos would be taken by you. Old photo could be scanned from film, magazine or newspapers (no need of EXIF). The second photo depicting something new, however, must be taken with Ricoh camera and with preserved EXIF!

And what do we expect to see? Let's say a building, street or another your favorite place photographed "n" years ago and now. Photo of an old car/boat/plane/etc... in its original and restored condition. A photo of your "n" days/months/years old son/daughter and now (doing something creative, not just a portrait please). Simply anything that fits. Be creative!

Rules:
You must post TWO photo right in reply to this post. Please, do not link them from other sites! Use the "Upload Attachment" instead.
Photo of something new must be taken with Ricoh camera!
The max size of the photo is limited to 1024x768 and the second photo (something new) must contain EXIF!
Please guys, make sure your photo contains EXIF! Entries without EXIF will be disqualified! Tip for LR3 users, make sure the "limit file size" option is disabled during export!
Ricoh film camera entries (without EXIF) are allowed, but only from people with previous forum activity and history (some previously posted Ricoh photos).

The deadline for posting contest photos is 28.02.2011 at 12PM forum time

At the end of each month I'm hunting for the titles over the entire post and sometimes I have no other option than to use "unnamed", which is somewhat silly

It looks like I'm the first to venture into "Old & New" territory. The "Old" image is from a print of a 1930s coffee urn I photographed about eight years ago. It was made with a Horseman 4x5 view camera and Fuji negative (ISO 100?) film. As you can see from the EXIF, it was copied with my GXR and A12-50. I didn't do anything special to light the print--just used daylight. The "New" image was made with the GXR + A12-50 and illumination was just daylight streaming into my kitchen. Ken

I hope this fits the requirements of the competition?
If so, I was going to call this "Piece Restored"...

This is the Gloriette, which was actually originaly constructed using many pieces salvaged from a Renaissance pleasure palace nearby.
I think its original 'new' condition was in 1775 (though, of course, much of it was already old).
The ruin was created by bombing in WW2, and the current 'new' a feature of the late 20th Century.
Hmm...is nothing ever quite what it seems?

Old and newer Ferrari's. Visit to the Galleria Ferrari in Maranello. I dont know if photography is allowed but nobody stopped me! White balance is a nightmare as the lighting is very mixed up (on purpose?) . The GX100 performed very well. Second pic was taken using a Nikon WCE68 wide angle converter on the GX100

Both pictures taken on the same day , I think it shows how Ferrari has developed! BTW my Brother in law (the guy in the shots) tells me that Ferrari have never had the same red , Ferrari red doesnt exist, can anyone confirm? Certainly these were both very different reds. Its a great exhibition to see even if Ferrari is not a wonder for you (Like me I prefer other toys such as cameras )

I'm no expert on Ferraris, but I understand the original dates back to the 1920s when national colours were encouraged by the governing bodies. We had British Racing Green, the French were in blue, the Germans silver or white, Americans sported blue and white stripes and the Italians were in 'Rosso Corsa' (racing red). All these colours varied somewhat, and they were usually somewhat muted. Unfortunately, Rosso Corsa came out rather brown on early TV sets and italians are known for their style, so in the mid 1990's Ferrari adopted a much brighter red to compensate. This colour has now become synonymous with the brand and is known as 'Ferrari Red'.

There is no way I could drive a Ferrari to a tenth of its maximum potential, but as a kid they were things that I thought "one day I will have you". I never bagged Melanie Griffith (who'd want to these days?), but a 1979 Ferrari GTS has stood the test of time rather better and is within reach. Speaking of Don Johnson's former notable rides, my other favourite Ferraris are his black Corvette-Daytona and white Pantera-Testarossa with NOS and those will turn the stomach of a Ferrari aficionado faster than a '57 Griffith.

not glare- there were blue light panels in the ceiling ,that reflected, which mixed with white light fittings and sunlight from the windows.
Does look like a Renault badge though :lol:

The 'Old' is Jimi Hendrix on stage at the famous Woodstock music festival on 18th August, 1969. Here, the media and other onlookers are allowed to get very close to Hendrix and his band (temporarily called 'Gypsy Sun and Rainbows' for the festival). There is a large amount of debris and litter left from the crowd on the slope in the background. The stage set-up is simple, and people are dressed according to the hippy style of the times. The picture really captures the spirit of Woodstock, and also the spirit of the times.

The 'New' is Nathan Cavaleri on stage with the drummer and bassist for the 'Experience Hendrix Tribute Concert' at the Enmore Theatre, Sydney, 20th November, 2010. Ten of Australia's best guitarists joined forces for the tribute concert, celebrating the music of Jimi Hendrix forty years after his death. The style of 'concert-going' is typical of today (onlookers seated in rows, and dancing in the isles if they wish). Also, the stage set-up and effects are more sophisticated, and people are dressed casually in t-shirts and the like, which is a popular attire for modern concert-goers in the Western world today.

At our dump there is a constant small stream of old electronics, on this pallet TV sets. We pay $2 as a recycle fee for large items such as these.
The stores have these huge flat screen devices . The nearest large store with more than 3 TV sets for sale is a Sears 45 minutes away. Of course the display area is always dark to show off the TV. Planned obsolescence is wonderful for the manufacturers but difficult for consumers. We all know it in the camera world and software world.

The first photo here was taken in 1992 by the famed Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama (who, by the way, often uses a Ricoh GR). I scanned it from a book. Like many of his images I found it striking when I first saw it, and after living in the Shinjuku area I discovered that it expressed well a certain aspect of living in this city where the sky seems to be almost disappearing behind such dense and often chaotic construction. Sixteen years later I tracked down the same back alley where the shot was taken, and made a kind of homage (with a somewhat different composition). In the intervening years the scene appears to have changed little, though arguably there is even less visible sky (a couple of new air conditioners appeared). More recently I passed through there, though, and it looked like a lot of that stuff was being torn out. So there may be no more chance to photograph this exact same tangle again.

The first photo here was taken on a Soviet black and white film in 1997 it was copied from a negative with my Ricoh in macro mode. This is the hotel "Intourist" which has been constructed in Moscow in the late sixties. The shape of "Intourist" strongly contrasted with historical buildings surround it in the center of Moscow, on Tverskaya street . In 1997 it was called "Decayed tooth" from glass and concrete. "Intourist" became the first large hotel taken down in Post-Soviet time. On the "Intourist" place in 2005—2007 the five-stars hotel Ritz-Carlton has been constructed(the second photo).
