Not sure what lenses you have for each but how would you compare the Oly and the Ricoh, IQ, handling, photo venue they are good at etc? Thanks for offering your time.
Olivier, are you planning on posting a fair comparison of images? The Eppy has only 6 mp but the IQ is stunning.
I'm heading over to your blog, please keep the light on...
Thanks...don
Interesting idea but in order to be a bit scientific you would have to get hold of m-adapters for Sony, Fuji and Olympus and use the same lens on all five cameras. To make it fair I would suggest VC 15/4,5 to check how each sensor behaves in the corners (color shift, vigneting etc) and a normalito of your choice: Summicron, Jupiter, Canon, Zeiss ( I`m talking about m-mount lenses or LTM with bayonet adapter). The normals are all pretty alike and perfect around 5.6-8. And two kind of pict. Archoitecture for wide VC and tight portrait for normals. Enjoy it. Stanis
Oops radical7. I wrote this post before reading your blog. Well you did reasonable O.K. I enjoyed thoroughly your reviews. As to Ricoh GXR you might add four important features others don`t have.
1. Due to modular concept you can change the moduls f.ex. m-unit with lens of your choice (in my case either with VC 15/4.5 or Tele-elmarit 135/4) with A12 28 or A12 50 macro in adverse condition ( strong wind carring mist droplets) without exposing the sensor (you can blow awaqy dust but not the droplets).
2. M-module itself has open/close setting for it`s shutter. I usually leave it on close which means when you power the camera off, the sensor is capped by the shutter. Epson has it, even when is on which is even better (Leica style). All others have sensor exposed during change of lenses which is no go for me.
3. GXR as the only camera has the option of using lenses with leaf shutter (A12 28, A12 50, A16 24-85) thus giving you flash syncro of 1/1000 from f2,5 to f6,3 and 1/2500 to 1/3200 from f7,1 to f;22. What that means in sunshine scene underexposed a stop or two and fill-in flash one can only immagine.
4. GXR m-module has electronic shutter going up to 1/8000. Talking about street photography taking the picture a foot behind somebodys ear or at church ceremony with dead quiet moments you really appreciate GXR in audible shutter. Once more thanks for your diligent writtings. Stanis
Olivier, this is great! You have put a big amount of work into your websites, well done and thanks.
I was interested to hear your views on the olympus OMD. This is a Heavy camera compared to the GXR. In fact it weighs as much as the old E-410 Olympus DSLR. What is your view on the EVF compared to the OVF of the older camera? How much better is the new AF and lens motor speed than the old kit zoom I wonder...
Rog>> Thanks man, it is indeed a LOT of work. More than expected. The problem is not the weight of the Olympus, its the grip, you don't really have a good grip and the front is slippery. I norder to enjoy it you need the grip witch comes with double battery that will run you 300 bucks, let's not talk about weird button placement... The EVF is very nice, no tilt and NO FOCUS PEAKING, so its hard with manual glass. I didn't try with the kit zoom but what I can tell you it's that the marketing was true, that thing focuses real fast and shoots fast too! A worthy DSLR replacement if you ask me. I think comparing it to other mirrorless cameras would be comparing apple and oranges....
Olivier,
I only ask that you consider that I am an old foolish shooter that can't figure things out when he reads a manual. I have some experience in photography but I'm told that doesn't mean anything.
So if my question seems off the wall or out of place...please pm me with a few 4 letter words and I'll just....well, something....
How do you compare all these great high falutin' fancy dancy cameras to the GRD4?
Sorry, but I'm having a senior moment.....
