English Menus on A12 28mm for Japanese Market?!

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone has a definitive answer for me, for the following...

I would like to purchase the A12 28mm for my GXR.

I have found a very reasonably priced new unit (selling out of China, stating originally for the Japanese market only).

I am concerned that maybe, it will not have English menus!

I am sure there are users here, having bought in Japan, that will be able to advise.

Your feedback will be much appreciated.

Thank you

Jay

Hi Autochrome - thanks for the feedback.

I'm with you, in as much as I THINK it is on model worldwide, but I wanted to be sure before I made a mistake

Having googled 'Japanese market only cameras', there are some threads that discuss how some manufacturers have started supplying units (in Japan), with native language option only. Panasonic and (I think it was) Sony were on the list. I can't however, find this for Ricoh, but I thought it might be prudent to check with the community, especially as some of our Ricoh forum members are located in Japan.

Whilst I'm sure I could muddle through and set the language option to English, if it it Japanese startup, I'll only be able to do this IF English is an available option.

Whilst my passion for photography is as strong as ever, it probably doesn't extend to learning a new language to operate my camera

I did ask the question of the vendor (via eBay function), but they came back with 'yes, you get an english manual/user guide', and seeing as my question was clearly about the in camera menus, it didn't really help.

I'll see what more I can find out and report back for those who may be interested.

Hi
In this case, it would be advisable to ask the question on a blog " in Japanese "; it has to be a feasible thing, with an on-line translator,no?
you can ask the question in english,by cause may japanese people can read and speak english.
The best is a blog with te both linguages

Is there a "menu" on the A12 module ?
I would think the menu is what is displayed on the screen of the GXR body unit, no ?
And whatever you fit as lens module, it doesn't matter, as long as your GXR body can display English...
(but it is just personal opinion, I never had opportunity to make the test)

Thanks for your responses all.

One thing that did occur to me when first posing this question, was...

"if my GXR body has English in camera menus (which it does), does it matter, or is the English/Japanese question even relevant, with regards to the lens/sensor unit that is mounted to the body?"

In the back of my mind I was thinking that perhaps each module (if perhaps it has unit specific functions or items relevant to only, say, the A12 28mm), may influence the menus in the camera body… or something like that?!?!?

I think that the answer is that (obviously), it is the GXR body that dictates the menu language options, and it just senses which unit is mounted and makes any amendments required based on the installed firmware.

Therefore, my original question regarding language options for the sensor/lens units is null and void, and this is borne out by the latest response I have received from the vendor (below):

hello,

oh! sorry .i misunderstood.
this is depended on your camera .not the lens.
the lens are standard for all camera

This isn't a definitive answer to the question (admittedly, one that only I it seems had asked), but just my take on it.

Maybe I'll keep my thoughts to myself next time! :)
