CX4 vs. CX3 vs. P10 Image Stabilization test

As discussed in another thread, here is the CX4 IS test. Since Ricoh's announcement of the CX4, I was really curious about the improved image stabilization. Ricoh says new IS is capable of 3.7 shutter-speeds! Let's say the camera will measure the shutter speed 1/15. Enabled IS should give you an advantage as if the shutter would be around 1/200! I'm always skeptic about similar claims ;) So here is a test I did today (actually, I did it yesterday, but I reworked it today)...

First batch of photos taken at 28mm:

Second batch of photos taken at 300mm:

Test conditions and conclusion:
I took 10 hand-held photos with each camera set to standard settings and with enabled IS. All 100% crops sorted from the most blurry on left, to the least blurry on right.

As you can see above, CX4 consistently shows lowest number of blurry shots both in 28mm and 300mm test. True, the difference is not dramatic in case of 28mm test. But there is a visible improvement in 300mm test. P10 seems does a bit better job than CX3 although both cameras (most probably) share the same IS system. I think it's higher GXR weight that makes the camera a bit better stabilized.

I'm not quite sure about Ricoh's claim about 3 times faster CX4 IS (if compared with CX3 IS). But the claim about overall 3.7 shutter speed advantage seems to be correct. A simple photographic rule says, that the shutter speed for hand-held photography should be at least 1 / effective focal length. In other words, for 300mm focal length you need at least 1/300 to be able to take sharp hand-held shots. This test proved that CX4 zoomed to 300mm is capable of taking sharp or nearly sharp photos even at 1/14 sec, which is, in my humble opinion, pretty impressive.

Now what would be great would be if Ricoh could make the IS silent or nearly silent and finally enable it for video! I think the humming sound produced by the IS mechanism is the reason why IS is not enabled in video recording mode, which is a shame ;) I don't remember any humming sound produced by LX3 IS?

Thanks for the test Pavel!
Maybe that this was the final argument that I needed for persuade my wife to go for a CX4 (instead of her CX1)...
Best regards, Gerd

You are welcome Gerd! I'm sure that if your wife liked the CX1, she well be in love with CX4. Unlike with some previous Ricoh releases, CX4 is a real step forward. The only thing I don't like so far is yet another grip. But it's not worse than the CX1 grip. Oh and don't forget about yet another battery (since CX3). This was, in my opinion, very unfortunate move, especially because I don't see any battery life boost that would excuse this change.

Thanks Pavel, surprise for me over the P10..... No brainer than, travel camera will be a CX4 but I am not in a rush and can wait 6 month without a problem.

Well, it's actually only 4 months or so to next CX ;) I really hope the next CX will finally add RAW. But I'm telling this after each R/CX release since R7 or so? :) I don't need or expect PASM modes form camera of CX range. But RAW is essential to make the tiny sensor camera usable at higher ISO (beyond ISO200).

Hi Pavel,
This weekend, when we visited my mother, I could replicate your finding that the CX4 antishake (I know, that's a Minolta term...) is definitely superior to the one of older CX cameras and the P10. It compared it with my P10 and my wife's old CX1, and there was not one sharp image with the CX1, whereas the CX4 was much better at this (there is a thread at dpreview with a personal test, and the tester claims that antishake is not effective for the CX4; maybe this judgement has to do with what you expect...).
Interestingly, and this also shows in your tests, there are always samples where the CX4 shots are completely "off" -- often they show double images. This seems to be related to how the new antishake mechanism works, I presume...
Best regards, Gerd
