Technically, two cameras need also same metering circuit to work on same battery (although, not mandatory....if calibration differ)
http://www.butkus.org/chinon/ricoh/ lists manuals for this cameras and they use same battery, to clear last doubts.
P.S. nice 500GX with rare winder! I have red Ricoh tripod - nice sturdy thing.

Page 11, chapter "Loading mercury battery", point #4 specifies to use 1.3V cell in 675 form factor. Which means it will be happy with 1.4V hearing aid battery with some O-ring to fill empty space. Cheers!
