APS-C 16 Megapixel 24-85mm GXR module

My challenge Streetshooter is the reason I didn't open my GXR for a couple weeks will be the same reason I will not be buying anything real soon. Hopefully my better half will finally realize my DSLR needs to go and that's where the funds will come from to fund my additional hardware.

If the new zoom was the size of the 50, it would be amazing. I don't think so. It's got to be much larger. I hope I am wrong. For me, the 50 is still compact. It fits in my jacket or coat pocket easily.

You're really trying to get me in trouble aren't you streetshooter? I'm still diggin' out of the last hole I put myself in!
 
I'm not hopeful about the sensor upgrade - seems like everybody says 'no' when the possibility of upgrade is brought up - what I'd like to know is if the zoom module will incorporate the phase detect sensors of the CX6 and GRD IV. Fast autofocus would make it a very interesting buy (if I had the funds that is!).

I don't think it's possible to upgrade the A12 28 & 50. Let me say this tho'. I make 16 x 20" museum quality prints from the two lenses. Perfect! So, for me...I could stay with these 2 lenses and never need anything else.
That being said, as Chris stated above... If the new zoomie has Phase Detect, IS of some kind and good glass... It would be very welcome in my kit.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 2 A12 lenses , they deliver great and will continue for many years to come.

I have them too and I love them. I am not complaining about the IQ.

I hear tell that Pavel is getting a special edition just for members of this forum. It's supposed to be a very compact 24 1.4 - 85 2.0.
I may have dreamed this but it would make a real nice reality....

In the past (even before GXR), Ricoh seriously considered sensor upgrades for high end cameras. Unfortunately, it most probably ended only at the level of wishes and dreams. In my opinion, it would be a logistic nightmare and definitely nothing particularly cheap. But most probably cheaper than whole new module? ;)

As for the external AF sensor, no, I don't think it will be incorporated in the zoom module. For two good reasons...

A) There is just not enough space and required distance from the lens. Even if there would be a spare room for AF sensor, it will most probably be blocked by the lens.

B) This step would make the existing modules obsolete ;)

I personally think that Ricoh will eventually release an updated GXR body with somewhat redesigned layout, new high res. LCD (known from CX6/GRDIV) and integrated AF sensor. This makes a lot of sense to me (unlike integrating AF sensor to each single module and re-releasing all modules). Additionally, this step would magically improve the AF speed of all existing modules (except the M module of course). And finally, this will be a very good sign to existing GXR customers that their modules are not abandoned. But of course, these all are just my pure speculations ;) But considering the GXR body is about 3 years old, it's a very good time for refresh.
 
I wonder if this new module (and especially the glass) will be better than the A12 28mm, because I think I occasionally can observe some artifacts (?) with the A12...
 
What kind of artifacts? Any chance you can post an example? I seriously doubt the zoom lens will be optically beter than the mono focal GR lens. Zoom construction is always about compromises.
 
With regards to availability, my Scottish dealer tells me that due to the ongoing flooding problems in Thailand, delivery to the UK has now been pushed back to February/March. I am not sure if Mainland Europe is likewise affected.
Having waited a long time already, another month (or two) won't make that much difference! ;)

I think this is the bokeh (out of focus) of the lens. I've seen the same with my module on out of focus areas. Since the building is out of focus the edges can't be sharp.

CA is typically more purple-ish. Check with CA correction in Lightroom if you want.

CES has just finished, but no news on the APS-C zoom :x Anyone know any reasons for the lack of products on display - sources here seemed to be confident about CES being the place to see it first? Am also wondering whether the zoom camera unit will be any cheaper than Canon's (nearly) APS-C fixed lens whole camera.

I asked about CES on Cristian Sorega's blog and he just replied (thanks Cristi) that only the press were shown it at CES, and that we will see it soon. I only hope that the auto focus is a little faster than the A12 50 (its only weakness for photographing active children like mine!).
