Hi all, another entry level question for you experienced users  - "Is it good to get a wide angle lens attachment for A12 50mm lens?"

So I was trying to figure out "shall I get the A12 28mm?", but my bank has already got the answer for me when I received the statement earlier :o. While I was really disappointed and so on, suddenly a thought came to me, and told me to look up some alternative ways to get wider angles. Then after a few minutes on the internet, I have come across this attachment from Pixco (and a few other, but they seems to be odd  ). It seems to be quite a good thing to play with, especially I am always disappointed by failing to capture exactly what I have want with the 50mm lens when there is no more room for me to move backward.

Considering it only cost around US$20, I am very interested to be able to do some shooting with a "22.5mm lens". But since I have no experience in using an attachment like this, I would like to see what you guys think (well, I have ordered it, hopefully can have some sample pictures for you guys next week 8-) ). And also, I would like to know how much decrease in quality / sharpness I shall expect when using this attachment.

Thanks!

Hi,

Well, I don't want to disappoint you, but I personally don't expect anything useful from this lens. Some time ago, I posted some comments about using Ricoh own wide/tele lenses with the A12 50mm. If you missed it, see this post:

Even the 0.75x and 0.79x high grade Ricoh lenses did not deliver very usable results with A12 50. The corners are very soft, even in cropped 4:3 aspect ratio (native is 3:2). True, all these lenses were optimized for another Ricoh cameras. But from time to time, they prove to be useful also with other cameras. For example, the GW-2 (GRDIII lens) works very acceptable with A12 28mm and DW-6 (GX100/200 lens) with GRDIII. But I would be seriously surprised to see better results from a cheap generic converter lens. But of course, it would be very interesting to see your examples! For US$20 it's nearly risk-free experience. And if nothing else, you may get very cheap FX lens for your A12 50mm? ;)

Thank you for the detailed information.

Anyway, the lens shall arrive by the end of this week, hope to get some snaps using it this weekend!
