A12 28mm/2.5 sound during AF

I've got A12 28/2.5 module. One question - the lens is buzzing during AF - the sound is a bit annoying, it's not like A12 50 module's sound.
Is it normal?

Re: A12 28mm/2.5 AF sound?

I don't have mine with me and don't use that often now that I have the M mount but I don't remember mine making any abnormal noise as you're encountering.

Is this a recent purchase? If so I'd look at finding another copy. My 28 module is very quiet.

I have been waiting this module for 1 month. It will take 1 month to change again... :)

Check, please, everybody who use A12 28.

Did you buy it from a local store? At least you could take it in and let them hear what its doing. Not that it would help on getting another one sooner but maybe validate your concerns.

Wow, just watched and listened to your video. I get home tomorrow and will see if I can't duplicate the same noise you're getting.

I've bought at Russian official Pentax/Ricoh dealer's shop via internet

Pay attention that there is some light grinding or rustling. Like the work of aperture blades.

here is one more video

Hi ogl,
I've just listened to my own lens and to be honest I cannot hear much difference between my 28mm lens and the sound track on your video.
Sound quality is not great though as my speakers are rather poor.

Not sure if this helps!

Ogl. You forgot to tell us how close to camera the mike was. Mine A12 28, at arms length is nearly inaudible. Put to an ear it makes very soft buzz hunting the focus finishing when it`s on with bit louder sound. Like zzzzz- BZ.

OK. The sound quality is not bad, to say honest. Just make your volume up. :)
Anyway,
It means that A12 28 is noisier than A12 50. Am I right?

Yes...:) Close to my ear. More ZZZZ-BZ than A12 50. :)
It seems to me now that it's normal.

You calm me down...

Both units are just about the same. But you know, the machines may have their days like humans. I think that since your A12 28 is new it has to be used for some time before the gears of AF motor get run in. Otherwise they are very quiet cameras thanks to leaf shutter. Often if I have sufficient DOF I AF the motive then switch to manual to speed up taking shots. That does away with AF sound too. In the average street noise nowbody will hear your camera from a meter distance. But should you want to photograph in f.ex. completely quiet environment like church and not be heard at ALL then the only solution, I`m afraid is to get m-unit which has beside normal shutter, louder then A12 28 and 50, has an electronic shutter. Inaudible. But the you have to focus manually. Nothing is perfect. Cheers Stanislaw

The gear became quieter after several days of use... It looks like AF motor's gears are ground-in.
