It was impossible not to stand there like a tourist (oh dear, perhaps i was one of those!) clicking away at these strange little parrot-like birds...

Such cute birds cannot exist. They must be made, naturally in China.

I think they still produce themselves! ;)
They do this in burrows (little soil caves) they dig into the cliffs...one of these burrows was directly under my feet...I waited for them to come out to take this one...
They are becoming rare, and it was super to see so many of them...and no massive DSLR telephoto lens required either!

They seem to be not very afraid of people then.

Good point! I think they are cautious but not really frightened. There could be several reasons for this. 1) I don't think they have been used as food for humans for quite a long time, so they do not look on photographers as "the hungry enemy" (I think they enjoy the attention actually!) 2) The burrows are deep, and if you were to stick your hand in you would quickly feel the wrath of that big (orange = danger warning) beak! 3) Although they are clumsy flyers in air, they are brilliant "flyers" underwater (I think penguins are too?) The water is never far away...just a quick dive from the clifftop when danger threatens (see additional photo attached).

When I first looked over the clifftop fence there was little to see. The incoming birds were landing further down the cliff and eyeing me with suspicion from further below. After a while they must have decided that the wife/husband/lover back in the burrow was going to make problems for then if they did not get back home soon, so they were cautiously making there way up to the cliff and diving quickly into the safety of the burrow. However, after a few minutes they peeped out to see if I was still there, judged me as on of the harmless ones, and all came out for a bit of sunshine. I could have watched them all day :) but we were only in Shetland for 6 days... :(
