Got my GR on Saturday. Came with fw v2.03. Was wondering if I lose all my settings if I update to v3? Figure on keeping the fw as is for a week or two. Get familiar with camera. Then update.

Also, I've been checking out charger and battery prices. The original ricoh stuff seems real pricey. 50 euros for a battery. 50 euros for a charger. Anyone using third party? Oh, and I found a few adds that list battery compatibility with the GR but it's a 3.7v not 3.6 like the ricoh. Is that something to keep away from? I just don't want to screw up the camera.

I've found deals like this:
http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B0013BJX7G/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ADRL5CT5F34R2

http://www.amazon.fr/Chargeur-Ricoh...18&sr=1-2&keywords=ricoh+gr+chargeur+batterie

So far I'm really loving the gr. control layout, customizable stuff, snap focus, just great. Image quality is really good. I think I have one dead pixel, but it vanishes when i enlarge the image in LR 4.4. It shows up as a tiny white dot. I see it in jpegs, but I tend to shoot only raw files now. Saw it while testing some of the camera effects.

I did download the profile from ricoh/pentax for use with my version of Lightroom. That helps a lot with color balance. I wonder though if things are any better if i upgrade to Lightroom 5? Wonder if adobe tweaked the dng profile at all. Anyone know?

ok. thanks for your help, advice.

Hi, these batteries are not compatible.
Look my picture.

The battery in the left is compatible with GRD 1-2-3 and 4
The battery in the right is compatible with GR + GRD 1-2-3 and 4

Can you see the differences?
Look some battery pictures before to buy a spare batteries ;)

PS: don't worry about the 3.6 or 3.7 volts. Both works well

Hope this helps

David

Regarding colorprofile and Lightroom: I have recently got the GR and instaled the firmware 3.00 at once. I'm using Lightroom 4 and have not upgraded it with any GR profile. Yet, to me, colors look perfectly OK straight from the DNG's. I suspect that the misscolors that have been reported was in the cameras DNG output, but that Adobe made a corection for this in LR5. With the new firmware the DNG's have been corected so they will work with the generic profile in LR. This is only my speculation. It would be nice if somebody could confirm or dis-confirm this theory of mine. Does it really make a difference upgrading to LR5 with firmware 3.00 in the camera?

I updated recently and am quite sure my settings are still there.
You can put the update on your SD card and have it ready there, the update is a manual process, you don't have to update straight way.

tintin, thelps, thanks for the info...

the only reason I ask about the color profile is because on some of my images, when there's flat colors like red, blue, yellow, red, orange, i mean say a plastic box that's solid blue, the colors seem a bit too saturated...then again, maybe i'm not used to ricoh color...

Davidtaub,

I did some testshots of subjects with flat colors as you sugested and I have to agree with you, the colors are in fact oversaturated (with firmware 3.00 and LR4) Straight out from LR4 they are even slightly more saturated than the default JPG colors - which also, to my eye, are oversaturated. If you upgrade to LR5, it would be interesting to hear if you find any differences. I have been looking for the color profile you mention from Ricoh/Pentax but couln't find any on their site. Would you mind posting a link?

Here you go, tintin...If i remember right, this is the link where i downloaded the file...

https://app.box.com/s/2595zvdi6fi8nwiiklww

found it as part of the comments in Ming Thein's review of the GR...

Ming if you want to fix the output color of the DNG files from Ricoh GR you must follow these steps:

1. Extract/Copy “Pentax Ricoh GR Adobe Standard.dcp” from ACR 8.1 RC or download the file from this link: https://www.box.com/s/2595zvdi6fi8nwiiklww

2. Then copy the .dcp file to the applicable directory:
Mac OS X: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles
Windows 7: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles *
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles *
* If you can’t find this folder, go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab > Select ‘Show Hidden Folders’.

3. Finally change profile from “Embedded” to “Adobe Standard” under Camera Calibration > Color Profile at ACR for your specific photo and you should now see the correct color appear!

ps. like you, I find the jpegs less saturated and vibrant...the dcp file helps, but i still find the colors very rich and punchy looking...also, it doesn't happen all the time...some files look more 'normal' and i don't know why...

I may create a preset for when i import the photos with a bit less saturation and then just adjust the images that need it...I was also thinking to set the 25 sharpening that's normal in Lightroom to 15 or 20...the images come in so sharp in raw that the files look a tad over sharpened...
