Hi to everybody

I am a DSLR pentax user, and I am looking for something compact to take everywhere.
(with zoom lens)

I am evaluating ricoh cameras , and I have some questions:

GX200 is it so bad ?

which has better image quality P10 or S10?

Any your suggestion is very welcome to help to decide

many thanks

Not sure about the P10 compared to S10. Only know that the S10 have larger and much better ccd. Same as in GRDIII, Canon S90, Samsung EX1 and perhaps some more.
The GX200 can be good but should be used in raw I think. The GX100 have a better jpeg-output than GX200. Gx200 have buffered raw while GX100 are not buffered and take just about 4 secs to write if it is a good card which is in use.
The GX200 have the same zoom as GX100 but improved dust sealings. The GX200 have slower autofocus than the 100 because phase detection auto-focus was removed:/
The best thing might be to buy a used GX100 and try to get it updated with the zoom and low noise ccd from the GXR S10.

Hi Davidex and welcome here! Nice to see another Pentaxian has found his way to this forum!

The GX100, even new one and with VF, for 300E seems to be a bit expensive? On the other hand, it may be hard to find another "new" GX100 for less than that so why not? Just keep in mind it's 4 years old model and the RAW writing is not as fast as in newer models (about 6 secs per RAW+JPEG). Also, you cannot use RAW in continuous mode! So if you are a RAW shooter, GX100 is probably not the best camera for you?

As for the question of P10/S10 image quality, it's hard to say. S10 of course provides slightly less noisy images than P10, because of its larger sensor. Also, the S10 lens is definitely sharper and less distorted. On the other hand, the P10 provides more universal focal range, much faster focus and if processed from RAW (with good RAW editor), you should be able to get some surprisingly good photos, even from the high ISO shots (up to ISO1600). It's really hard decision ;)

If you look for something really pocketable and unobtrusive, I would suggest to go with GX100 or maybe GRDIII, which price is now at very acceptable level (GRDIV is right behind the door). Hope this helps?

thank you for your reply, but ...

I don't know what to do I will decide

Gx200 it seems to me too expensive, And i am not sure to want buying it.

I found a GXR body + S10 unit for 499 EUR new, perhaps this could be a better deal ...

I will see

thanks

Hello Davidex

About 3 months ago I buyed a Ricoh GX100 from Amazon.com. With all the fees, (transport, etc.), it was in the pricerange of your occasion. So for this price, you still can buy a GX100, if you really want to, don't hurry.

I am very happy with it, but I don't use Rawformat and I am not a photographer. Compared with the G700, which came out about september 10, some actions like opening, deleting pictures, etc. are slower. But fotographing itself is very OK for me.

Short answer, yes, the GX100 produces definitely better IQ especially in case of ISO200 and higher ISO values. But at low ISO, GX200 wins because of higher resolution.

GX100
+ less and better looking noise
+ noticeably faster AF
+/- less noise reduction in JPEG = more noise in JPEG (some love this approach/some hate it)
- occasional missfocus because of missadjusted PD sensor
- some people reported problems with dust on sensor
- slow RAW and no RAW continuous mode
- relative loud operation

GX200
+ higher resolution and so detailed files
+ better EVF experience due to different signal processing (brighter view and faster refresh rate)
+ better dust sealing
+ much faster RAW writing including continuous mode
+ GRDII-like menu and feature set
+ relative silent operation
- nearly useless beyond ISO200, especially in JPEG
- very strong noise reduction visible even at low ISO = smudged JPEG
- very slow AF because of absence of external PD-AF sensors.

GX200 is fantastic camera if you shoot at low ISO and in RAW. It's packed with many GRDII features and this alone makes it better camera than GX100. However, its noise reduction and very noisy 12MP sensor limits its usability to low ISO and RAW only camera. Just my opinion ;)

Could be this a good price ? Or it is however overpriced ?

thanks

I have numerous Ricohs, including the GX100 and GX200. The GX200 is far outclassed by even the ancient Fuijifilm FinePix F200EXR. It has a better zoom range and better sensor. I have the XZ-1 and that kicks the GX200 in the goolies. The GX excels in manual control, in interval shooting, macro and as a good light camera. Build quality, aside from the lens barrel is still best in class. Otherwise, I wouldn't buy the GX. The GX200 is discontinued and marked down heavily by most retailers. I wouldn't but a P10 or S10 either. They share the weaknesses of the GX200 in a bulkier form factor. I think the XZ-1, LX-5, and other premium compacts are a better buy unless you want to get into the whole GXR system. Even then, the new NEX and EP3 system cameras are probably better. I can't wait for the GRDIV, though.
